For more than a decade prior, Veda had been using guitar and piano to make angular, intense, askew, often-quiet but always-haunted music informed by interiority, character studies, and fairy tales. "This Riot Life" surely meets all those adjectives compared to average, but for Hille it's a massive blast of extraversion, aided by strings, horns, woodwinds, some major keys, and profiles of both people and communities who aren't her, and can use the kind attention.
