The Beauty and the Beat is a double-dose of retro and summer vibes, combining cheeky surf rock guitars and the vocal charm of the"girl groups" of the 1960s. Taking a page from groups like Blondie, It packs a punch vocally but its real strength is the energy that pushes it along. In a way this sounds like so many contemporary indie albums that are revered on this site.
It's hard to believe this preceded R.E.M.'s Murmur (same label). As much as I adore that album, this one has more accessible hooks and charm and lyrics that can actually be comprehended. I believe this was one of the first records where an all-female group had this level of creative control.
Highly Recommended.

I love the go gos. Their music has raw energy in it.
Thier tunes have great lyrics and very catchy melodies.
Their best tracks are We got the beat and Our lips are sealed

The Go-Go's might be my favorite all-female band and this consistently solid debut is testament as to why.

The Go-Go's helped to define the classic "80's sound" with this album, but mostly it's just a couple of hits and a bunch of (admittedly well-played) filler. The hits are titanic, so I would recommend Beauty and the Beat for that reason, but it's pretty much a pick-and-choose affair.
