From someone who thought this would be indescribably awful, I have to say: It's actually quite good.
Selena has good songwriters on her side, good production (for that style) and the pacing is quite good. I can listen to the whole album without skipping a track though 'Hands To Myself', the title track and 'Rise' stand out. Lyrically it does zero for me but that's fine as I'm not exactly the target audience.
This album is good, but just barely. Which I think is still a large improvement.
The beats kind of carry this album, because they make the weaker songs bearable.
It's called revival but it doesn't seem as cohesive as I tought it would be. Selena starts going in a new direction, but by the end of the album, I can't really tell if she succeeded because so many of her old songwriting traits begin to pop up.
The big criticism I have is that she lacks personality while singing. She's pulling off these beats better than most other pop stars, but that is because her music lacks personality. You could replace her with another average singer and this would be the same for the most part. Except for "Hands to Myself" which finds an actual specific strength in the softness of her voice.
So yeah, this album is decent-good, with a couple of standout tracks, and nothing bad, but plenty of average things holding it back.
