Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.0/100, a mean average of 71.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.6.

As someone who gets a fair amount of enjoyment out of Social Distortion, their debut album from back in 1983 is fairly unremarkable. For its time, I'm sure it was rad and energetic.

Unlike many hardcore bands at the time, early Social Distortion had influences: Garage rock, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, etc. But they need work. Getting clean must have really brought things into perspective and the raw energy displayed here was channeled property with decent songwriting and melodies.

This era of the band was featured prominently in the documentary Another State of Mind.

Mommy's Little Monster is just OK. Other bands in the '80s were doing this much better, especially the groups on Slash Records (X, Blasters, Gun Club). It would take a few years for the group to find proper footing, but once they did they never looked back.

Not recommended.

Condensed to a 7" Single:
A-Side: Another State of Mind
B-Side: Mommy's Little Monster

This band is overwhelming, everything they made is great. This is a must-have punk album, probably one of the best punk records ever.

My favorite Social Distortion album. Mommy's Little Monster is really overlooked when it comes to punk classics.
