I saw Holy Ghost Tent Revival at the Albino Skunk Music Festival in South Carolina back in 2009, and they were one of the highlights of one of my favorite music festivals. This studio album doesn't fully capture the fun and energy of their live performances, particularly when so many people are up next to the stage dancing as they were that cool October evening. Nevertheless, there's a lot to like about this Asheville, North Carolina, based soul-rock horn band that recalls sixties and seventies classic rock such as The Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers, contemporary jam bands like Dr. Dog, and New Orleans brass-band jazz. I really like "Hammer Fell," with its multiple changes in volume and tempo that highlight its dark emotional undercurrents.
