Quite a change of pace for this Texas singer-songwriter. Instead of rolling off lyrics like Bob Dylan or singing drunk/ drugged anthems like Jerry Jeff Walker, this time he sounds like a depressed Townes Van Zandt reflecting on a lost marriage. This makes Lovers and Losers his most sincere effort. It's full of heartache but it's such warm emotionally pleasing record. He collaborates with Nashville songwriter Darrell Scott quite a bit on this one to good results. He still has fire and inspiration here, fueled by inspiration from his son.
