We needed the Sex Pistols - musicianship was getting too complicated, disco ruled the clubs, and arena rock ruled the airwaves. We needed a group of angry kids to pick up their guitars, and make up for shoddy playing with sneering attitude. Sex Pistols steered us in the right direction.

...but there's so much better music out there. Even within Punk, the Sex Pistols are a second-rate band. Avoiding pretentiousness does not mean that you can't be able to play. Crafting melody does make one a sellout. The Clash, Dead Kennedys, and even the Ramones were much better. The Sex Pistols were influential, but overrated, and their sound hasn't aged well.
