Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. I think this is a really solid chart. (Although it looks like a lot of people have passionate disdain for it; sorry about that, man.) A lot of Radiohead and Velvet Underground is definitely respectable, and I think Rufus Wainwright is way cool, so, overall, good job.

I think this is a pretty decent list. Some of it is really disparate genre-wise (like Pantera and Faith Hill), which means some picks don't sit well together, making it seem a little strange. However, I think an enjoyment of wildly different genres is essential to a good appreciation of music, and while I wouldn't pick some of these albums myself, I'm certainly not against someone else doing so (that's why this site exists in my opinion!).
