After his utterly charming homemade solo debut, and the major artistic statements of George and John, Beatle Paul had yet everything to prove as a solo artist by then. He did it with this pop extravaganza of an album, ragged yet sophisticated, tight and loose, carefully crafted but retaining a spontaneous feel. A marvellous, highly melodic and energetic musical achievement (those vocal harmonies!). The miracle is that he keeps on making (often) brilliant music to this day. Macca's most commercially successful album... and one of the very best released by a former Beatle. Most of the backing tracks were recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, under trying circumstances. Catchy, uplifting, and bearing repeated listening exceptionnally well. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2014]

A wonderful piece of work, unusually serious in tone- with lighter moments- mostly performed solo (a multi-instrumentalist at the top of his game), with Nigel Godrich overseeing the proceedings. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2014]

The largely home-recorded (+ a couple of studio sessions), truly solo debut, recorded as a one-man-band in the midst of the acrimonious Break-Up. The album retains an endearing homemade feel, with lots of brilliant, if half-finished, ideas; lo-fi 25 years before the term was coined. Oh, and there's "Maybe I'm amazed" on it. An adventurous album by a super famous musician in disguise, who plays everything on it; 13 tracks recorded in 13 days over a 12-month period, with Youth (ex-Killing Joke) producing. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2014]

Working on the Beatles' Anthology, Paul McCartney was reminded of the impossibly high standards of his former band. Recorded sporadically over a period of four years, "Flaming Pie" was a timely reminder of why we loved him in the first place. A real gem of an album, in which even the "lesser" moments contribute to its overall charm. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2014]

A super pop/ rock production, imaginative, energetic and melodic. A case of form over substance perhaps, but when the form is as enticing as it is here, does it matter? [First added to this chart: 03/26/2014]

10 years after "McCartney" and in the midst of another breaking-up band (Wings), Paul goes totally solo again, this time with a very different electronic, synth-heavy vibe. If you like McCartney when he is a hard-hitting singer, a piano ballad man or a meticulous pop craftsman, you'll feel short-changed here. If you enjoy his experimental, goofy side, his "mad scientist" persona still coming up (pun intended) with catchy melodies and quirky hooks, you'll love this album, as I do. For the record, this is music that snapped John Lennon out of his 5-year retreat from music-making. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2014]

A thrilling musical journey. Yes, the voice is an old singer's now, but this is very creative pop music by anybody's standard. When you start thinking a 76-old multi-instrumentalist is behind it, well it's mind-blowing. Rock on Sir Paul! [First added to this chart: 09/09/2018]
