George Harrison launches his post-Beatles career in style with an epic and classy demonstration of what he couldn't do within the Fab Four. A major songwriter and guitar player at his creative peak. Even Phil Spector's Wall of Sound is thrilling. The best album by a solo Beatle?

Following the break-up of the Beatles, John and Yoko started a psycho-therapy with Doctor Arthur "Primal Scream" Janov. The result? This stark masterpiece of confessionnal songwriting, minimalist in its arrangements, intense and wounded. Terrific, harrowing stuff.

After his utterly charming homemade solo debut, and the major artistic statements of George and John, Beatle Paul had yet everything to prove as a solo artist by then. He did it with this pop extravaganza of an album, ragged yet sophisticated, tight and loose, carefully crafted but retaining a spontaneous feel. A marvellous, highly melodic and energetic musical achievement (those vocal harmonies!). The miracle is that he keeps on making brilliant (often) music to this day.

Macca's most commercially successful album... and one of the very best released by a former Beatle. Most of the backing tracks were recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, under trying circumstances. Catchy, uplifting, and bearing repeated listening exceptionnally well.

His most famous album. The title-track has become part of human heritage, but it shouln't overshadow the rest of the album, full to the brim of great songs and contrasting moods.

A wonderful piece of work, unusually serious in tone- with lighter moments- mostly performed solo (a multi-instrumentalist at the top of his game), with Nigel Godrich overseeing the proceedings.

An adventurous album by a super famous musician in disguise, who plays everything on it; 13 tracks recorded in 13 days over a 12-month period, with Youth (ex-Killing Joke) producing.

George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison deliver an ego-free, superb and fun set of songs in serendipitous conditions. Miraculous.

The "Lost Weekend" album. A drunken, loutish, misbehaving, enstranged-from-Yoko, and more insecure than ever, Lennon suddenly sobers up and records this excellent and haunting collection of finely arranged songs, while keeping their intrinsic rawness thanks to his exceptionnal singing.

The largely home-recorded (+ a couple of studio sessions), truely solo debut, recorded as a one-man-band in the midst of the acrimonious Break-Up. The album retains an endearing homemade feel, with lots of brilliant, if half-finished, ideas; lo-fi 25 years before the term was coined. Oh, and there's "Maybe I'm amazed" on it.
