Miles Davis... So Far... by
AAL2014
My "..So Far..." chart series continues with the King of Cool, Miles Davis. Much like my John Coltrane chart, the "..So Far.." chart features an artist with a vast catalog, much of which I haven't listened to just yet. But the beauty is I will always be adding to these charts as I continue to make my way through the respective artists' life in music. It will be a constant dialog for me sharing my love of albums that are new to me.
Here's my Miles Davis chart. Let's begin.

The Crown Jewel:
In A Silent Way is unlike any album I've heard before. Flawless ensemble playing to create auras and moods rather than just songs, especially from Tony Williams' laid back, minimalist approach. IASW is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever had the pleasure of pressing play on. It only gets better when you realize it's the calm before the Bitches Brew storm. One of the most chaotic, nuanced, layered albums of any genre I've ever heard. I didn't like this album at first, it took multiple listens over a relatively long amount of time to finally click with me. My ear had to catch up to this record big time but the pay off was grand. This album is as impressive as the lineup of Who's Who jazz and fusion all stars who accompanied Miles on the album.
These are some of the greatest instrumental conversations ever recorded in the history of jazz. The topic at hand? The future, asserting control over chaos, and of course the occasional inside joke. [First added to this chart: 01/30/2018]

An all time classic of course, as well as one of the more proper statements of what jazz is, could be, and should be. Kind of Blue's beauty lies in it's simplistic nature compared to that of a Bitches Brew, etc. Within the construct of this album, Miles' arrangements along with he and his cast of jazz greats' performances shine bright through the crisp, ahead of its time sound and feel. A landmark.
