MetallicA
by AAL2014

I love Metallica. Always have. Always will. They've gotten me through tough times. They introduced me to a new style of music, taking what I all that I thought was possible in rock music to the extremes. Anger meeting harmony. Power meeting grace. Thrash meeting taste.

If you don't agree with what you just read, that's fine, wouldn't be anything particularly new when it comes to my love for Metallica. Quite the opposite as it all started in 7th grade.. Before I loved Rush or Iron Maiden or anybody short of Van Halen, Hendrix, and Stevie Wonder. A friend of mine convinced me to listen to Metallica and get out of my comfort zone. He burned me copies of Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets (copies that I still have with his, uh, rendition (?) of the MetallicA logo loud and proud with black Sharpie). Those albums burned holes in my CD player at the time as I fell in love with the music, the likes of which I had never heard.

Since then, obviously I have expanded my horizons even more and Metallica has come and gone from my listening habits but never from my list of favorites or influences. I have had to defend my love for Lars Ulrich more times than he has fucked up Disposable Heroes live. ;) But seriously, Lars is a huge influence of mine and I wouldn't be where I am today as a musician without his beats to guide me through my first few years of drumming. Internet drummers and friends be damned, Lars is a drum hero.

Anyway, I love Metallica. Here's my take on their greatest work that developed a legacy for them that few bands have ever achieved. Enjoy Metallica lovers and haters.

The Crown Jewel: The most complete album in the discography for my money. The only time this record lets up on you is when you need it most (part of it's brilliance) like the intros to Welcome Home and Orion. Tasteful and beautiful as well as pounding and furious. Deserving Runner Up: Nearly as complete as Puppets, and it laid the blueprint for the following 2 albums. Influential as it is heavy, this is still an unbelievable album. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2015]

Worthy Bronze: ...And Justice lacks so much in production but for some reason, that's part of it's greatness. Metallica at their most technically proficient and their last great metal album. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2015]

Kill 'Em All, Metallica's first album was the groundbreaker for them and the genre. Song-wise not as good as the following 3, but still great and important. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2015]

The Black Album does not deserve all the hate it gets, but it does have some blander tracks and goes on a little long. Still some bangers on it. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2015]

Metallica's most recent effort is similar yet different from Death Magnetic. It's too long but there are some amazing tracks on here that show Metallica still gives a fuck.

Disc 1 is great, nearly flawless. Disc 2 dips biiig time until Spit Out The Bone. This could have been condensed into a top 5 Metallica album had it been 8-9 songs.

Not as bad as people say, some excellent songwriting and honest lyrics, but very long. A few too many tracks. Cure did not need to be written.

Also: Fuck the Metallica Logo on this album cover.
