Rush - The Studio Albums
by AAL2014

NOTE: This chart (unlike my main) is to show my estimation of what a bands greatest work is. I chose the order by estimating greatness (influence, resonance, play-ability, popularity and how much I like it). Hope you enjoy

-------------

"Attention all planets of the solar federation... We have assumed control."

I've always viewed this as Rush saying "We have arrived." Now, I've made my thoughts on 2112 very clear on this site, but there is no denying how on point that title track was and it was the first time the group created a legacy that they could later cement. One that has reached fruition big time in the past few years with album anniversary celebrations, an excellent Rock Doc, an induction in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and a fan base that is bigger than ever....

Rush is a special band for me. There is a reason why Rush is the second band that gets a custom chart on my page (after the Beatles)... They're my favorite. From the moment my dad and I watched the Live Rush In Rio DVD, I knew this was the band for me. I heard what was considered prog, but in a different, more straightforward way with better hooks, bigger riffs, and at the time the best damn drummer I'd ever seen.

I was 14 when I first watched that DVD. I saw Neil Peart twirl his drum sticks in the 2 second gaps in the songs and that was it. I had been playing the drums for a few months before that, but that was the moment that I wanted to be fucking great. Since then my life has not been the same. Since that point, I have accumulated all of the Rush studio albums and most canon live albums on CD and a number of them on vinyl (which can be seen in 'My Collection' on this site). I have seen them 3 times live, each time a different kind of greatness than the last. Overall they continue to be a source of inspiration for someone like me, not a misfit per-se, but never one to be the popular kid either.. as those kids are pricks.

This is for Geddy, Alex, and Neil for 40 years of a friendship with their fanbase never taken for granted. Take as big a vacation as you want, boys. It's been a one of a kind ride. Thank you Rush!

The Crown Jewel: The most complete Rush album. Technically smart and a clean machine built of songs like moving parts but doesn't require anything from you to keep your attention. Hugely influential album for many musicians as well.

Deserving Runner-Up: Basically Moving Pictures Part 1 and a tiny bit proggier. Plays very well and has 6 great songs. Another really influential album.

Worthy Bronze: A sprawling 20 minute PROG epic to start may be deterring for some listeners, but not me. Side two features 3 Rush classics including one of the best instrumentals ever.

An underrated gem in the Rush catalog. Starts really well with Subdivisions and the Analog Kid (2 of my absolute favorite post-Moving Pictures Rush tracks). The rest of the album has many other structurally solid, melodically memorably, and of course technically impressive moments on this 1982 classic. Check out the beautiful Losing It.

Rush finally taking the full plunge into their poppier sounds and keyboard/reverb heavy years, but the substance is still there in a smart and moving way in the cases of most of these tracks,

The breakthrough Rush album with one of the great prog songs of all time. Side two does not hold up to call it a top three album. Please don't pretend otherwise. Extra points for the title track simply being incredible, the classic album cover and for its influence though.

Much better than the 73/100 rating on this site. I couldn't believe how good this album was when it came out (35 years after their first). Some flaws in its washy and loud production, but both in terms of performances, writing, and how it plays as a full record, this is the best Rush album in yeaaaaars.

I don't hate the rap in the title track. But a lot of people do and this whole album gets a bad rep as a result. I think it's my favorite post Power Windows record [First added to this chart: 11/18/2015]

I love every Rush albums, even the bad ones. But I LOVE Presto. Extremely underrated in my opinion, and in theirs. Look up some more info about Presto and try it again.
