Tish Hinojosa is a singer-songwriter from San Antonio who sings in both English and Spanish. She mixes her own folk music with traditional Mexican music, as well as American country music. You may not know it, but she has had a long and busy career, having released 22 albums since her 1987 debut. She’s never had any hits to speak of, and hasn’t released a single since 1994. That was “I’m Not Through Loving You Yet”, from her sixth album, Destiny’s Gate. While Hinojosa is a fine songwriter, what really makes her worthwhile is her voice, which never disappoints. Even here, where she tends to go a bit too far on the sleepy ballad side, her singing pulls everything through. She thanks the influential Linda Ronstadt on this album, and gets help from the great Bela Fleck on banjo.
Is Hinojosa an underrated gem? There are certainly arguments in favor of that here. “I’m Not Through Loving You Yet” is a perfect and fun country song, and her Spanish tracks are shining moments. And, again, even though the ballads don’t bring much, Hinojosa’s voice carries even the lesser songs. She considers her music to be border music, mixing her US and Mexican heritage together, but at least here, she’s more on the American side. This is a lovely voice that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough, and one that you have to, unfortunately, dig a little deeper to hear. It’s worth doing, because Tish Hinojosa has a real gift, a warm soprano that has the ability to light a warm fire under even the blandest of material. And that is worth more than a little. You seem to be a big Tom Petty fan. Nothing wrong with that, he's one of the great.
