2000-VIRGIN
Various Producers
1. Shitbag 9
2. Bring Your Lovin' Back Here
3. Emergency Surgery
4. Hit On The Head
5. Flavors
6. 78 Stone Shuffle
7. We Haven't Turned Around (X-Ray)
8. Buena Vista
9. Shitbag
10. Steve McCroski
11. Wharf Me
12. High On Liquid Skin
13. Rosemary
14. The Cowboy Song
15. Getting Better
Odd that after only two albums, Gomez would already be releasing a collection of outtakes. So, while much of this collection is pretty unnecessary, there are moments...in particular, the song that first turned me on to Gomez ...the excellent "Buena Vista". The track is obviously the centerpiece here, and it's nine minutes of why Gomez is an awesome band.
There are other gems here as well, but about half of this could have stayed unreleased and no one (except for their hard core fans) would have known any better. The version of The Beatles' "Getting Better:" is nice, and there are alternate versions of better known tracks. Basically, this is an album of bonus tracks.
On the plus side, it came with the very early Machismo EP as a second disc, which is excellent. [First added to this chart: 09/14/2012]

1. Feelin' Alright
2. With A Little Help From My Friends
3. Delta Lady
4. She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
5. Cry Me A River (Live)
6. The Letter (Live)
7. High Time We Went
8. You Are So Beautiful
9. The Jealous Kind
10. Many Rivers To Cross
11. Up Where We Belong (with Jennifer Warnes)
I bought this because I needed the Cocker version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" for a band I was in...and it was the only Cocker album there that had it. The A&M 20th Century Masters series is fine for the casual fan, but there are no credits at all, no notes, skimpy packaging, and worst of all, it contains the last 4 songs. Cocker was a master cover artist in his day, taking on The Beatles, Traffic, The Box Tops, and others with a fiery originality. His later material is weak, and should be sought out only by serious fans.
Tracks 1-7 are all worth having. Tracks 8-10 are not. And track 11 is just an abomination, showing how far Cocker slipped. Look for a better Cocker compilation. He has more great music than there is on here, and you can get it without the lousy songs included at the end. [First added to this chart: 04/16/2014]

There were two phases in the career of Heart. In the beginning, they were a young band that wrote and performed a mixture of rock and folk songs with a very good level of success…a lot of hits. But in 1985, after ten years and seven studio albums, the creative waters were stagnating. Simply put, Heart ran out of songs. It was a great run, but their two previous albums, Private Audition and Passionworks, were basically duds. Heart did something that not a whole lot of bands would have the courage or stamina to do. They changed their image, and turned the bulk of their songwriting over to outside sources. The results were stunning. Heart found new life in the glam rock world, and they released a string of albums over the next decade that brought them enough success to warrant an 18 song best of, keeping their career alive and bringing them huge success.
Now, you might prefer the version of Heart that gave us classics like “Crazy On You” and Magic Man” and “Barracuda” and “Even It Out” over this one, which embraced power ballads and synth driven radio friendly pop rock. And while songs like “These Dreams” and “Never” and “Nothin’ At All” may not be your cup of tea, you have to give it to Ann and Nancy Wilson…they took a big chance with their careers, and it paid off in spades. Some of the decisions may seem questionable (Ann’s syrupy duet with Robin Zander, “Surrender To Me”, for example), but they were able to not only survive the next decade the way few of their contemporaries could, they actually were able to kick out a few gems like “If Looks Could Kill” and “What About Love”. So, good for Heart, for finding a way to survive in a musical world that had almost passed them by. [First added to this chart: 07/04/2019]

15. Things Have Changed
The Essential series from Columbia Records has had a few gems: the Bruce Springsteen edition, for example, is a very well thought out collection. The Essential Bob Dylan is almost in that category. As a hits compilation, it serves quite nicely. As in introduction to the career of Dylan, it’s pretty much perfect. Covering the time from “Blowin’ In The Wind” from 1963 to his contribution to the Wonder Boys soundtrack (Things Have Changed) fom 1999, this covers not all of them, but certainly the most important bases. The obvious songs are here, and it’s great to have them in one place.
The best part of this compilation is the surprise tracks. “Hurricane” from Desire is a great addition. “Quinn The Eskimo”, “Silvio”, and “Maggie’s Farm” are unexpected surprises. Having everything run chronologically is a plus as well. And for a career as long and full of great moments as Dylan's, putting it down to only two discs can be daunting: Columbia got it about as right as anyone could. This is a fine collection.
