15. Getting Better
Odd that after only two albums, Gomez would already be releasing a collection of outtakes. So, while much of this collection is pretty unnecessary, there are moments...in particular, the song that first turned me on to Gomez ...the excellent "Buena Vista". The track is obviously the centerpiece here, and it's nine minutes of why Gomez is an awesome band.
There are other gems here as well, but about half of this could have stayed unreleased and no one (except for their hard core fans) would have known any better. The version of The Beatles' "Getting Better:" is nice, and there are alternate versions of better known tracks. Basically, this is an album of bonus tracks.
On the plus side, it came with the very early Machismo EP as a second disc, which is excellent. [First added to this chart: 09/14/2012]

5. The Dajon Song
The year 2000 was a strange one for the British band Gomez. After releasing only two albums, they put out the odd compilation of B sides and unreleased material, Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline. They also released the Machismo E.P., a twenty-six minute blast of five songs that strangely enough remains the band’s most successful disc to date. It’s hard to find by itself these days, but it’s usually included as a bonus disc with either Shopping Trolley or their 1999 album Liquid Skin. Machismo steers the band into more experimental territory, using loops and samples on the title track and varying the sound from track to track to make the disc very much a chameleon.
Machismo, like the rest of the early Gomez catalog, did very well in their native country and Austrailia while being almost completely ignored in the United States. Too bad, because this is a very American sounding band. As time has passed, they have slowly gained a foothold in the US while slipping in the UK. But, there’s really nothing conventional about Gomez, which is part of their appeal. The Machismo E.P. is a nice bridge between Liquid Skin and In Our Gun, and deserves more recognition as an important piece of their discography. You’ll especially feel that way after chilling for all 13 minutes of the excellent closer, “The Dajon Song”. If you find this gem hidden in a full Gomez album purchase, you really have scored.
