Top 15 Music Albums of 2018 by DeusExMackia

Well heck! It's the first time I've made one of these charts, and I think I've finally settled on an order for the albums here.

2018 has proven to be a real standout year for indie labels, debut albums and alternative music in general, whilst the Neo-R&B wave continues to be strong and some of the best hip-hop in ages has been released (I think I'm finally liking Trap too at last). Here's hoping that many of the bands and artists on here come to define this era of the late 2010s music scene.

Best songs: Never Fight A Man With A Perm, Samaritans, Great

The most essential record in years. A catalogue of insanely catchy socio-political anthems that tap right into the heart of the struggles and problems modern Britain faces in the most happy-angry way possible.

Best songs: Star Treatment, One Point Perspective, The Ultracheese

A true musical middle finger to listeners who wanted something safe. A tough sell if you were expecting the 'typical' Arctic Monkeys album, and some would almost certainly ask if this isn't just a new Last Shadow Puppets record. But how far this band have come; I detested Tranquility Base the first time I listened to it, and now I'm on my umpteenth listen and it's on my list of favourite albums of 2018.

Best Songs: Concrete, One Rizla, Angie

Tailored, safe-yet-exciting post-punk. A solid debut album that captures themes of youth in a positive outlook on a downtrodden world. The welcoming, friendly charisma of the South London band's sound is instantly accessible and hugely likable; it's provided an apt soundtrack to much of my year so far.

Best Songs: Love Lost, Strange Light, A Few Times Too Many

The Goon Sax's easy going, laid back second album is a quietly innovative and highly relaxing record. The kind of soundtrack you want when cooking scrambled eggs for breakfast on a lazy Sunday morning. Previously at #7, it took a few more listens for the penny to drop and to realise I'm really very genuinely in love with this album.

Best Songs: Talking Straight, Mainland, Bellarine

Soon to become the jangle pop album of our generation. RBCF's clean, summery debut is as warm as its album artwork implies, with youthful spirit and a gorgeously jangly pop rock feel. Compared to the vast majority of indie albums of recent times, this one stands out beautiful with the depth of its production and its fantastic guitar riffs, which I could write about extensively for each individual track.

Best songs: Miami, Tyrant, After The Storm

Sure to be regarded as one of the finest additions to the 2010s alternative/neo-RnB wave. Isolation is confident, summery and innovative, with Uchis' alluring voice being the real driver for the record. The smooth blend of contemporary RnB and Latin-influenced beats feels really well done, while the eclectic range of featured artists properly help to expand the sound of the record. Tyrant in particular really hits the mark thanks to Jorja Smith's fantastic voice.

Best songs: The Lives They Wish They Had, Magnolia, Photo Opportunity

The bastions of middle class youth disillusionment return for a shorter, more concilidated and more heartfelt third outing, delivering what is without question their best record to date. When you've grown up in the same sort of placer as Slaves have, Acts Of Fear And Love comes across as a record that just speaks your language. It's personal not just in terms of its tone, but because it knows exactly what you're going from. Oh, and it absolutely rocks at some points.

Best Songs: Dawning, In The Air, Warsaw

Well intentioned wanna-be britpop that takes a few nods from shoegaze and dream pop in just the right places. It sure isn't the most original record in the world, but it's the band's delivery that cements it for me; For Now is such a fun, crowd-pleasing album, and its packed to the brim with splendidness.

Best Songs: Fire, Kids, F.U.U.

Dream Wife's playful, unending energy is impossible not to be drawn into and kick's ass with its punky spirit and lush production. Their debut album offers plenty to like, lacking in ideas to keep you guessing throughout its full 34 minute run time but certainly offering plenty of stand out tracks. The short of it, however, is this: Dream Wife's debut is a great record, but it really comes into its own when heard live, and when you can see just how much fun the band have playing their music.

Best Songs: Disconnect, Ultraviolet, Stigmata

Basement's latest outing is tighter than anything they've released so far, yet retains the instantly likable, happy-emo sound they own so well. It lacks the distinction and innovation to be something really incredible, but it's hard to find anything to dislike on Beside Myself. Care-free, energetic and enjoyable.
