I find myself coming back to Basement's latest outing on a fairly regular basis for a dose of easy-going but enjoyable alt rock. The record is tighter than anything they've released so far, yet retains the instantly likable, happy-emo sound they own so well.
It lacks the distinction and innovation to be something really incredible, though it's worth noting that the band are moving on from their 90s-replica sound found on their back catalogue to date. 'Lucky Charm' feels like a balanced mix of American pop-punk with docile, unegregious vocals; Be Here Now is one of the catchier cuts on the record and could easily do well as a single; Stigmata has this lush, warm opening riff that bursts into an anthemic guitar chorus that is just begging to be heard live.
Despite its definition-related shortcomings and a continuing lack of outright originality, it's hard to find anything to dislike on Beside Myself. Care-free, energetic and enjoyable, with a hell of a lot of replayability.
