Saw How We Live back in the eighties at the Cornwall Coliseum supporting Clannad. Steve Hogarth fronted the band prior to taking over vocal duties in Marillion. If you can imagine a more upbeat Marillion with sax this was How We Live. If you like the Marillion album Holidays in Eden you will, most probably like this (if you can find it). I wish I could get this on mint vinyl, in my opinion a superb album, in my top three!

This incredible bunch of musicians have produced in this album, a masterpiece of fusion jazz melded with rock to deliver an upbeat rhythmical and highly listenable musical experience. What makes this instrumental album quite different is the way that different instruments take the lead at different times, sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between the digital horn, lead guitar and synths. Another great feature of this album is the slap

Swing out Sister's music is happy and uplifting imo. There are some great tracks here, Breakout, Surrender and Fooled by a Smile are particular favourites. Most tracks are underpinned by really simple yet effective electric bass lines. As fresh today as when it was released in the eighties.

I have the newly released vinyl which is superb. Splitting it into quarters by vinyl sides:
Side 1 is the three hits which made the album famous. All excellent!
Side 2- The opener is an absolute stocker, almost progressive in its leanings. 'Running to Stand Still' is a beautiful track with some great harmonica to take it out.
Side 3- 'Red Hill Mining Town' is a personal favourite showcasing some amazing Bono vocals with equally great backing vocals which sound like they are being played from a keyboard via a sampler... 'in God's Country' is upbeat and more 'pop like' in its delivery. 'Trip Through Your Wires' has a Gaelic tinge and is a happy 'poppy' offering. Could be considered by some as a filler track.
Side 4- 'One Tree Hill' is another personal favourite with leanings towards Simple Minds more recent material, so ok, it's probably the other way around! 'Exit' is quite progressive to kick off breaking into quite a heavy and dark affair which I like but may not be everyone's cup of tea.'Mothers of the Disappeared' has quite a synthesizer deep backing which I love, it compliments Bono' vocals.
All in all a stonking album! I would like to say my favourite U2 album but I have been listening to Achtung Baby on You Tube during recent gym workouts and when I get that on vinyl I have a feeling it may top this! [First added to this chart: 04/03/2021]

This could become my favourite Marillion album of both the Fish and Hogarth eras. The keyboards on here are awesome with some amazing Mini Moog soloing particularly on Incommunicado. I can see this album standing up among such masterpieces as Genesis Selling England by the Pound and Yes Close to the Edge. Yes, I am serious. It probably won't happen until Marillion call it a day completely which probably won't be long now based on the recent concert I wasted my money on. I used to admire Hogarth but not after the last concert where he could hardly string a sentence together he was so pissed on stage... when someone walks on stage with a cricket bat with some electronics fitted which seem to do absolutely nothing, then that is time to call it a day I think...

Not to be confused with the American band who stole the name, this was the original Nirvana formed by Patric Campbell Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos. Nirvana rarely played live, their song arrangements bordered on orchestral in parts however there were heavier parts. The use of cello on most tracks adds a quality which accentuates the beautiful musical textures and vocals. Surprisingly this compilation of amazing songs doesn't include the psychedelic single which made them famous, the very infectious Rainbow Chaser. That said, it is possibly a forgotten treasure that is most worthy of a listen, if it can be found. Black Flower, Pentecost Hotel, Illinois and Tres Tres Bien are all beautiful songs.

I haven't listened to this album in ages, like years! I have it on in the background now and forgotten what a great album it is. I don't find it too synth heavy as I know some do. In fact I like the synths and bear in mind Rush were using a Moog way back in Farewell to Kings and 2112 days, admittedly more for sound effects. Parts of this album take me back to Grace Under Pressure, particularly 'Open Secrets'.

Imagine what this album could have been if all members of the band were present and getting on, including Roger Waters. That said it is an excellent album although Pink Floyd in name only given that Nick and Rick's contribution was fairly minimal. It is without doubt David Gilmour's first solo album as was 'The Final Cut' to Roger Waters. It is closer to 'Wish You Were Here' than 'The Wall' which is a step in the right direction. Much as I like 'The Wall', there is an overbearing sad theme accentuated by bitterness which is Roger Waters childhood. This theme re-surfaced on 'The Final Cut' but has gone forever from this album onwards.

This album so much makes you want to get up and move! Love the meld of synths with the jazz foundation provided by the bass and drums. More of a rock feel to it than some of the other Spyro Gyrations works. For synth fans there are some great synth solos to be found here, Moog/Arp I am guessing. Some great guitar soloing too!

The follow up to 'Shades of Liberty' wasn't in the same league really. There are some good tracks like the title track, 'Heartland' and 'Sanctuary' but the lack of Alex White on keyboards is noted. This is still a really good album which sits between Simple Minds and U2 territory.
