This album is heavy as hell. It is filled with the sounds of chains and grinding gears and sirens... at least it feels like those are the sounds that fill up this mammoth album. The guitar riffs are so so sooo heavy and massive that sometimes I don’t even notice how primal and simple most of them are. The way the band builds all these disturbing and varied sounds around the massive riffs is what makes everything seem almost all-consuming. Impressive sound design.
The drums mostly are also somewhat “simple” - they sound like almost tribal ritualistic drumming. The shorter transition tracks create these eerie connective tissues between the massive epics that dominate the album. The way each song builds is strikingly dramatic in a sort of miserable and hopeless and brutal sort of way. Godspeed does this pretty well as well. The vocals are excellent because they are so un-metal - they are rabid, anguished cries of utter pain and desperation delivered in a post-hardcore sort of way. The vocals actually are less “post-hardcorey” here than on their earlier Souls at Zero album but they maintain that grit and power and relatability that sets them apart from almost every other metal or sludge album.
The album is really so cohesive and so of-one-piece that I find it hard to find a track that I’d ever dream of playing in isolation from the rest of the album. It’s a complete package album that builds and maintains a hopeless and dire world, fraught with pain and loss. And it manages to tear this world of woe down in its finale with such breathtakingly heavy extremeness, it was actually a little overwhelming. Incredibly impressive.
Do I personally LOVE this album as much as some of the other recent albums I’ve gushed over on this thread? No, not exactly. But, I mean, that’s a matter of taste obviously. I do think this is one of most well executed, downright immersive, apocalyptic, and heavy albums ever. And it stands alone as it’s own and quite unique and genius through and through. This is cool, another cool dark atmospheric punishingly heavy at times beautiful at times sad at times downright mean-spirited sludgy classic from this legendary band. It has a little better flow than Through Silver In Blood, but I think the album before this one is better and more of an acheivement. There are still really a whole hell of a lot of truly impressive sounds and moments here. Of the albums I have heard by Neurosis with any great attention paid, Souls At Zero is probably my favorite, because it seems to be that perfect balance of sludge and pissed off post hardcore. With this one a good 7 years after souls at zero they had mostly moved solidly onto their established very great style and I can hear much less of that pissed-offness I love in their early 90s albums. The vocals are less awe-inspiring here which is a bummer because the vocals on earlier neurosis are godly and perfect.
The mood is again that neurosis vibe of apocalyptic brooding morbid darkness, and that is dope and done here as well as anywhere else I've heard it (outside of Through Silver In Blood, or, in a VERY different way, Hecker's Ravedeath 1972) and when I'm next really in the mood for a long-ish, conceptual, flowing piece of post apocalyptic art, I will stop here again for another listen (plus it will eventually be heard in my 1990s artists deep dive. That will be some months though.) [First added to this chart: 08/26/2021]
