Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by pjohnsongolf Unknown

This is my current Top 100 albums. My knowledge of music is expanding daily. I am a young 20 year old from small town Idaho but am far from a typical Idaho kid culturally and politically. This website has helped me so much and I’m grateful for all the amazing users on here!

Edit* As of 3/18/21 this will be limited to 1 album per artist

P.S. I am trying to make this as diverse as possible. (So there isn't a billion prog, Weezer, and Radiohead albums)

Favorite Track- U

Since I was 12 Kendrick Lamar has been by favorite artist. That was the year he released Good Kid M.A.A.D City. Now that would be completely normal if it wasn't for the fact that I lived in a small town in Idaho where all anyone cares about is rodeos and country music and have no idea who Kendrick was. This made me the only kid in my school of 300 students that liked his music. Fast-forward to 2015 and he dropped To Pimp a Butterfly. By then the people here knew about Kendrick. He was the black rapper Fox News talked about his awful lyrics about hating the po-po and becoming the BLM anthem (people in small town Idaho hate BLM). However, this instantly became my favorite album ever. Track for track Good Kid might be better but how this album flows is truly remarkable. From an instrumental standpoint this was Kendrick's most complex mixing multiple genres. His lyrics touch down on a lot of the issues of that time and still hold a lot of value to this day. This album just might have left more of an impact on the world than it did on music which is remarkable in its own aspect. Anyways I could right a lot about this album and a lot has already been said about it. All you need to know is that is my favorite album of all time for many different reasons.

Favorite Track- Casimir Pulaski Day

The summer after I graduated a couple buddies and I started our music journey with this website. This was one of the first albums we listened to together. Listening to this album changed my entire perspective of music. It is what got me hooked for more than what the top 40 and trap artists have to offer. The lush instrumentation and powerful lyrics truly alter your state of being as you progress from track to track. From the joy and excitement the horns bring on Come On! Feel the Illinoise, the haunting John Wayne Gacy, Jr. gives, the sense of nostalgia that comes from Chicago, and the sorrow and pain that Casimir Pulaski Day brings, this album takes you on an incredible emotional journey.

Sufjan has one of the most consistent catalogues in all of music.

Favorite Track- Only In Dreams

Weezer was one of the first bands I obsessed over when I first decided to get into music. I go back and forth between this and Pinkerton but Blue always hits home. I am so much emotion attached to this album.

Favorite Track- Gouge Away

I first listened to this with my buddies in their basement. This is an album that blew my mind during my first listen. The tracks here have a perfect blend of harshness and pop that have you screaming the lyrics every time they are played. Although I love Surfer Rosa I feel like Doolittle is the Pixies at their best and most diverse.

These guys might be my favorite band

Favorite Track- Dogs

This album is inspired by Animal farm and political corruption. As a fan of Orwell’s work and prog this naturally draws me in. In my opinion this is Pink Floyd’s best work. Although this is prominently a Roger Waters album I think Gilmour shines more than ever here. From the soul separating solos on Dogs and powerful riffs on Pigs I have yet to find an album with as impressive guitar licks as this has. Along with incredible lyrics from Waters this album is definitely my favorite progressive rock album.

Favorite Track- Weird Fishes / Arpeggi

My favorite Radiohead album varies all the time. While their greatest album is most definitely Ok Computer this is the one I can listen to without getting tired of it. This is the perfect blend of their alternative rock from OK Computer and their experimentation of electronic music on Kid A. I can get lost in these songs forever.

Favorite Track - New Magic Wand

This album ages so incredibly well. It is impossible to get sick of and gets better with each listen. The concept is nailed perfectly while also being so sonically dense yet catchy. Tyler perfectly combines Neo-soul and rap to take us on a chaotic journey that still pleases to this day.

Favorite Track - I Would Hurt a Fly

I read a story about someone calling this not an album but a phenomenon. This truly is that. This is Indie rock perfection combining of post rock and emo with plenty of psychedelic jam sessions throughout. The songs are all drawn out more than traditional length but leave you wanting them to never end. This is proof that some great things can come out of Idaho.

Favorite Track- Obstacle 1

Some more Indie Rock perfection here. The atmosphere an album brings is one of the most critical for me in order to get my attention. Holy hell does this album have that. Right from the start you are sucked into another dimension.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.4/100, a mean average of 92.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.3.

I like the 1 artist rule as it gives breadth to your chart. Also like that you have discovered Australian artists - your selections are great! We only have 2 albums in common - Grace & Remain In Light - but given that I could be your granddad, I wouldn't expect anything different. Enjoy & embrace your musical journey through life - it will always bring rich rewards.

Flower Boy is not better than Igor, but I really like this list anyways. Very eclectic and reflects your taste very well.
