This came out just as I’d moved house, was sleeping on a mattress on the floor and used to put this on every night. Each sound and moment on this record feels like a labour of love, which makes sense when you learn part of Sophie’s process was literally drawing out the waveforms. Genre-defying maximilism. You could argue this was laying the groundwork for the groove-laden cyberpunk glam of Heaven to a Tortured Mind but this album acts as a perfect bridge from his more formless ambient / post-industrial albums to the more pop-oriented song structures he seems to have settled into now. Put off listening to this for the longest time, don’t know why. Her voice is incredible and even though this is an entirely new way of blending flamenco and modern pop, there’s a familiarity to it that makes this album instantly captivating. [First added to this chart: 11/06/2021]

Honestly the most fun I had listening to something this year. A whole load of jumped up ragga / dancehall with great transitions between each tune and some analogue synth / found sound noodlings thrown in for good measure. [First added to this chart: 11/08/2021]

Sublime crate-dug plunderphonics with a deep-fried production-aesthetic that has the effect of the music crumbling away before your ears. Probably Nicolas Jaar’s best project although ‘Sirens’ and 'Nymphs' are also up there. [First added to this chart: 11/05/2021]

Like if Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits collaborated in the era of hip-hop and nu jazz. [First added to this chart: 11/09/2021]

I’ve been following Earl since he dropped ‘Dat Ass’ so this release was really satisfying, obviously he’s always had a crazy amount of natural talent and now it’s as if he’s figured out where he wants to be in terms of lyrics and flow, with this stumbling, lethargic, subversive, almost anti-rap cadence that sometimes sounds like it’s neaaarly going to land on the beat, leaving you wanting more. Obviously borrowing a lot from MIKE and others but he’s absolutely put his own spin on it. The beats on this fit his style perfectly with their warmth, grain and wooziness. Excited to hear what he does next but wouldn’t be upset if this was his peak. [First added to this chart: 11/05/2021]
