Genre-defying maximilism. You could argue this was laying the groundwork for the groove-laden cyberpunk glam of Heaven to a Tortured Mind but this album acts as a perfect bridge from his more formless ambient / post-industrial albums to the more pop-oriented song structures he seems to have settled into now. Honestly the most fun I had listening to something this year. A whole load of jumped up ragga / dancehall with great transitions between each tune and some analogue synth / found sound noodlings thrown in for good measure. [First added to this chart: 11/08/2021]

I’ve been following Earl since he dropped ‘Dat Ass’ so this release was really satisfying, obviously he’s always had a crazy amount of natural talent and now it’s as if he’s figured out where he wants to be in terms of lyrics and flow, with this stumbling, lethargic, subversive, almost anti-rap cadence that sometimes sounds like it’s neaaarly going to land on the beat, leaving you wanting more. Obviously borrowing a lot from MIKE and others but he’s absolutely put his own spin on it. The beats on this fit his style perfectly with their warmth, grain and wooziness. Excited to hear what he does next but wouldn’t be upset if this was his peak. [First added to this chart: 11/05/2021]

Three of this generations best songwriters join forces for ... unsurprisingly ... some of (if not the) best songwriting of the year. Maybe slight overkill to have three-part harmonies on near enough every track but still, the collaboration definitely brought the best out of everyone involved, with ‘Souvenir’ especially having some gorgeous, vulnerable lyrics with Baker, Bridges and Dacus passing the baton between one and other. Lovely atmosphere too, I’d compare it ‘High Violet’ in some parts with those splashes of scratchy strings and the ethereal backing vocals [First added to this chart: 11/07/2021]

Like it or not this thing slaps. Cardi’s lyrics and flow are intoxicating, the beats are of blockbuster quality, the features are like the icing on the cake - all this for a debut! [First added to this chart: 11/08/2021]

The guitars sound like lazors, the drums sound like tin cans hit at full velocity and everything sounds like it’s been fed through a sandblaster. [First added to this chart: 11/05/2021]
