This is the most melodic album Ghost have done so far, which is a sound I personally enjoy more than their older metal sound. There's a lot of hooks and catchy choruses, but still with their occult themes and style.

Best Songs on the album for me are Spillways, Darkness At The Heart Of My Love and Griftwood, but it's a very consistant album, and every song is pretty good.

I think Bloc Party did a great job on this album of balancing their weird, spiky sounds with catchy, melodic parts which bring the songs together. Callum Is A Snake, By Any Means Necessary and In Situ are the best examples of this for me. If We Get Caught is also a lovely sounding softer song, and is definitely a highlight of the album. This is a psychadelic rock album, which isn't normally a genre I'm a fan of, but I really enjoyed this. It has a lot of proggy instrumental sections combined with some great hooks which tie the songs together. Highlights for me are Duet, Tristicia Amnesia, and Suck Push Bang Blow. This is a full on 80's thowback album, it's glam metal but with more 80's synths. Highlights are probably Turborider and Outrun, but there's not much between most songs on the album. It probably isn't objectively one of the best albums of 2022, but I absolutely love 80's glam, and I enjoyed this album more than most I've listened to from this year. Ten's albums from 1996 to 2001 are some of my favourite albums ever, but they have had a few patchy albums recently. I think Here Be Monsters is a step up from the last few, although with a few of the same issues. The first two songs combined are over 15 minutes long, which is a bit of a slow start to the album, and in general songs can feel a bit too long.

There are some great melodic rock songs on this album though, with The Dream That Fell To Earth being my favourite, and Strangers On A Distant Shore, The Miracle Of Life, and Immaculate Friends being other highlights.

After listening to this a couple of times, Maroon and Mastermind are the highlights, nothing else has stood out that much. I think this might grow on me more over time, but it's pretty far behind 1989 and Red for me at the moment. [First added to this chart: 12/15/2022]

White Lies are still clearly a very Joy Division influenced band, but their songs are musically a bit more bouncy and upbeat on this album. Am I Really Going To Die and As I Try Not To Fall Apart are clear highlights, and lyrically I Don't Want To Go To Mars is interesting. The album is definitely front-loaded though, as although there aren't really any bad songs on it, there's nothing in the second half of the album which stands out either. I'm a bit ambivalent about this album. Avril Lavigne's last album seemed to be moving into bland, Adele inspired pop, but then there was an emo-rap driven resurgence of pop-punk, and with the guest appearances from Machine Gun Kelly and Blackbear this feels a lot like Avril Lavigne jumping on the bandwagon to capitalise on this more than anything else.

I do like the album though. I think the singles Bois Lie and Bite Me are the highlights, but it all sounds alright. I have a soft spot for pop-punk though, as it was a big part of the soundtrack of my teenage years, so I enjoyed this even if I felt it was made just to take advantage of a trend.
