For some reason, the best song on this album, "The Light Before We Land," wasn't released as a single. However, it was used as the opening theme song for a Japanese animated TV series called "Gunslinger Girl," so maybe that's some sort of consolation. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2022]

The Pernice Brothers are one of those bands that reliably releases a pretty good album every few years, except for the one year in which they released this one, which is really, really, REALLY good. Unfortunately, they were wrong - the world did eventually end, in 2024. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2022]

This is Charlotte Hatherley's first, and probably best, solo album after leaving Irish crunch-pop band Ash. A more acoustic version of the title track was released on Ash's 5-song EP, "There's a Star," but I'm not suggesting you get that too, because that would just be ridiculous. It took five tries to finally produce this, Mojave 3's most upbeat, catchy, and generally entertaining album, and afterwards they gave up and eventually became Slowdive again and recorded one of the greatest comeback/reunion albums of all time. So, what was it all for? No one can say. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2022]

I don't have any "hard evidence" for suggesting this, but it seems to me as though all of Smith's previous albums had been written to be played at solo gigs with just him and an acoustic guitar, whereas this one was meant for a band, or at least him and some backing musicians. It has more diversity, more atmosphere, and (to my ears) much better songwriting overall. So it's my favorite Elliott Smith album by far, though for some reason BEA currently ranks it at #4 in the Smith catalogue, behind all those solo-acoustic records. My guess is that someone cheated. The Venus 3 lineup consisted of Robyn, Peter Buck (REM), Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), and Bill Rieflin (the drummer, who played in several bands including King Crimson). I guess you could call them a "supergroup," though it would probably be more accurate to call them a "super side-project." [First added to this chart: 07/21/2022]

Here on BestEverAlbums.com, I am - by quite a large margin - the biggest fan of this indie-pop debut solo LP by the lead singer of the Delgados. It's my favorite album of 2007, and I've never really forgiven the rest of the world for not making it a much bigger success. You hear that, people? That's right, you're all on my "naughty list," dammit. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2022]

I've never told anyone this, but after I heard "Pet Soul" I tried to combine and synthesize "Rubber Soul" and "Pet Sounds" into a single standalone album too, just like these guys, except I did it with an industrial shredder and the results were completely unplayable. There was a time when anyone asking me for my list of the ten greatest albums ever would have just gotten a list of my ten favorite XTC albums, and prior to 1999, there were only ten XTC albums. In other words, an XTC album would always be ranked #1 on any chart produced by me, regardless of the time period being covered (assuming they'd made an album during that time period). So while I don't like to admit it, this album was a bit of a disappointment - and the XTC guys knew it too, which is why they stopped making albums after this. All very unfortunate, to say the least. It's still better than what you're listening to right now though, unless you're listening to some other XTC album. [First added to this chart: 07/21/2022]

These guys had the tragic-history-inspired post-rock crescendo-core downer-music genre pretty much all to themselves, and though they decided to abandon it for some strange reason (probably something to do with "record sales"), we still have this album to refer to whenever anyone asks about how it all went down.
