The Pernice Brothers are one of those bands that reliably releases a pretty good album every few years, except for the one year in which they released this one, which is really, really, REALLY good. Unfortunately, they were wrong - the world did eventually end, in 2024.

I don't have any "hard evidence" for suggesting this, but it seems to me as though all of Smith's previous albums had been written to be played at solo gigs with just him and an acoustic guitar, whereas this one was meant for a band, or at least him and some backing musicians. It has more diversity, more atmosphere, and (to my ears) much better songwriting overall. So it's my favorite Elliott Smith album by far, though for some reason BEA currently ranks it at #4 in the Smith catalogue, behind all those solo-acoustic records. My guess is that someone cheated.

I've never told anyone this, but after I heard "Pet Soul" I tried to combine and synthesize "Rubber Soul" and "Pet Sounds" into a single standalone album too, just like these guys, except I did it with an industrial shredder and the results were completely unplayable.

Generally considered to be their best album, it's the one with their biggest hit on it ("Stacy's Mom"), along with a whole bunch of tunes that are as good or even better. And of all the albums on this chart, it's the one that has the most "emotional resonance" for me personally, because of what my life was like when I first heard it (not so good) and the effect it had on my morale (very good). Thanks, guys.

The Curtains (that's what we called them) made two albums during the tail-end of the first wave of shoegaze in the 90s, and then disappeared for about four years, at which point they released just 300 copies of a 4-song EP called "Volume Tone Tempo." After that, it took them another five years (which were probably spent label-shopping) before they finally reappeared with this LP in 2005. All four of the "Volume Tone Tempo" songs are on it, including (in my estimation) the best song they ever recorded, "Two Wonderful Stars." I guess what I'm really trying to say here is that even though this is an album site and not a "song site," you should just listen to that one song and then decide if you want to work your way backward from there.

This album of 14 hook-filled quirky pop confections was released in 2005, but the tracks on it were all released as vinyl subscription singles during the 2003-4 time-frame, so naturally everyone is confused about what the release date should be. And when I say "everyone," of course I actually mean "me."

When I was a little boy, I often wished my own older brother was a kite, because that way I could fly him into a tree. That thought isn't the only reason I like this band, but I'd be lying if I said it had nothing to do with it.

In the mid-90s there was a shoegazey band called "Orange" whom I thought very highly of, so when this band appeared I kind of hoped they would sound just like them, only more so (as the name implied). It didn't quite work out that way, as these guys are more of a jangly-guitar power-pop band. Even their album covers had less orange in them, but they were still pretty good. This is their second album; I prefer their fourth ("New Comes and Goes") over this one, but in any event, a fifth Oranger album came out in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic when Mike Drake, the band's surviving co-founder, decided to record some tracks (mostly by himself) during the lockdown and release them as Oranger. (Apparently the other bandmembers didn't mind that so much.) So that was at least one nice thing to come out of all that death, disease, and administrative incompetence.

This is a collection of b-sides, live tracks, and other unreleased material, so I should probably rank it a lot lower than this, but it's just too good. There, I said it.

Speaking of Fountains of Wayne, Ivy was (is?) the side-project of FoW's bass player, the late Adam Schlesinger, along with singer Dominique Durand and guitarist Andy Chase. This is their fifth, and in my opinion best, album — though most people will probably tell you their second, "Apartment Life," is the best one. The fact is, "most people" will just say whatever pops into their heads at any given moment. I wouldn't trust them. I wouldn't trust me either, but that's only because I'm already familiar with myself.
