60/100
I didn't know Lord Huron before this album was in my radar. Granted, I had not even heard The Night We Met (that as of writing has 834mill Spotify plays - and I really like it) before I checked out Long Lost.
In a world of music where AutoTune and synthesizers take up a lot of the soundscape, and where anyone and everyone can bake a mediocre song together on their computer, it's refreshing to hear something that sounds real, authentic and maybe even (strangely enough) a little old-fashioned. You can say Long Lost doesn't touch previous records who did the same formula, but it is clearly ahead of today's sound. The charm and concept of Long Lost is derived from an old soul that I dig alot. Seemingly, the album tells the fictionalized story of the band's (real) studio, Whispering Pines and presents in the best 1950's-like variety format also the works from the many and diverse souls who originally stepped on the musical footsteps that Huron himself seems to follow, spicy with evocative interludes (e.g. nice TV show snippets) and the studio host's intertwining announcements, which conceptualize the time travel that the listener has agreed to [Nicklas Christensen, 2021]. The most refined songs are secondary Fleet Foxes-ish experiences (just listen to Twenty Long Years and see what I mean).
Ultimately, though, the question is whether Long Lost can hijack its 16 tracks, and the immediate answer to that question is no, it cannot. Because unfortunately, some of the songwriting is kind of weak in comparison to the genre's legends, and Lord Huron's voice isn't as long-lastingly impressive as I would like to. Four love ballads are arguably too many, while one could have kindly cut the crap in the form of what can best be described as 14 minutes of "nothing"-ambient on the closer Time's Blur.
Overall, one is left with a work whose greatest attraction is a passion and accomplishment, whereby Lord Huron has intertwined their album concept, and where Long Lost's overlapping and charming whole is stronger than its isolated parts. It results in more of a substantial Starbucks album than a conceptual collection of tunes that are classy. But whatever, this is decent. [First added to this chart: 05/26/2025]
