If we take Sufjan's output throughout this (as now of writing) 2-year decade, I was not looking forward to this. Not only did he (beginning of 2021) release the absolute bloated 5-album set Convocations with only like 20-30 minutes worthy of material within, in 2020 he also recorded and dropped The Ascension which has just so happened to be one of the most tedious, longingly disgraceful and epically bad albums I've ever heard in my entire existence. The fact that he, Sufjan Stevens of all people, made that albums still shocks me considering how much I love his 21st century masterpieces Illinois and Carrie & Lowell.
But right from the get go, he with a sonically tender guest performer Angelo De Augustine, has brought back what made him special to me. Simply put, A Beginner's Mind is a 45-minute indie folk album with no intention of atrocious electronics but only the wavy acoustics as well as nice harmonies. There is surprisingly very little to dislike about it, other than the songs blend into each other a bit and the songwriting is not in Sufjan's highest league. But beside those and the few average moments, this is a good album and I hope upon repeated listens I will label it great. [First added to this chart: 05/26/2025]
