60/100
Off the get go, Glass Beach shows more heart than the average indie rock band their generation. Coelacanth genuinely is a nice tune, especially the gentle acoustic part. The Radiohead worship is too much on Motions. But it picks up again on Slip Under The Door, where the band does a challenging norm of mellow and math rock, possibly the album's highlight. Guitar Song is predictably my kind of song, though a bit of the vocals are again too Radiohead-esque for me to love it. I can see what they did on Rare Animal, and their dynamic is fine enough, but it just sounds like a tired tune. The rich instrumentation on Cul-de-sac lift it up, but the singer should stop imitating Thom Yorke. On Whalefall, they sound more taken aback, while the sort of cryptic, semi-tribal instrumentation is allowed to shine, making for another highlight. Puppy is such a mid noise rock track, nothing standing out. The Killer is also sounding like a D-tier or E-tier Yo La Tengo song, though not without the dynamic that Glass Beach has carried the entire album. The least dynamic song comes on The CIA, with the exception of the heavy last minute, the drums don't match the wave of hard rock guitars. 200 is a mellow tune turned into another Radiohead-esque artsy rock platitude, it's listenable but skippable. The nine-minute sprawler Commatose is the album's epic moment, going from quiet observer, to firesearcher, and even when it comes to the climax, it's still performed humbly: definitely not something expected, and I mean that very positively. The last track, Abyss Angel, falls almost victim to the same premise of songs like 200, but the execution and the way it sticks the landing is more absorbing in sonic texture.
Overall good album, like said the dynamic of every instrumentalist is what is keeping it together from never hitting levels of 'really bad'.
