These songs are dancing through their own daydreams. They can be rhythmic, or slowdancing, but there's always something that makes Lucy's vibe connect with an innocent part of the sonic psyche. Obviously I am reaching here, that's just my own interpretation when I listened to this record. It's at least a reason to know that the music is pleasant, though not original. There are two things about How Lost that withdraws the Cocteau Twins replication: the dance elements and Alison's vocals. Cocteau Twins never incorporated the alternative dance drum machines to this extent which was a reason why they were outstanding in the landscapes and universes of the 90s. And Fraser's voice is more synthetic, ambiguous and colorful, whereas Alison is swamped in breathy platitudes and semi-seduction (the main reason why I don't think this album has the enjoyment of a masterpiece, as it can get a flick too monotone. This is almost a lost treasure of downtempo from the 90s for a few songs, but without sounding stale (I have a feeling that this was the sort of music that shameless sell-out hacks like Tame Impala was aiming for on the slow rush). Nonetheless it doesn't make me an outright fan of the sound, and that's why the record, as a whole, falls in the good-really good range. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

It's quite delicate for a trippy folk album. It's also enjoyable, albeit kinda forgettable. When she sings in her preternatural deep range, is where it's best. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

I dig the Jandek inspiration and attempted intimacy, and when more instrumentation comes in like on the progressive Fool Me As Many Times As You Like, or footsteps as percussion on Hymn it feels fuller. But dude, move out of the house if you don't wanna disturb your parents sleeping. Unless the very breathy quietness is your style, then it's the reason the record isn't excellent, aside from the hypnagogic folk pop homerunner Annihilation. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

The first of the two albums by Greg Foat I heard this year, remembering the understated Honeybear. And it's very by-the-number straightforward enjoyable jazz. Less of the "Cool Jazz" genre I had hoped for but whatever. Nothing bad, but nothing remarkable either. Just good. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

This is not space ambient, this is paradise ambient. And what's more impressive is that it borrows the whole 80s retro sound and is carrying the new age philosophy, without ever sounding like an imitation of those genres, nor buddy-buddy with their clichés. Sounds like 36 set out to make instrumental electronic meditations, excellent to dose off to.
The downside to Reality Engine is that it starts off strong, with the arrangements of Imagine The Truth and Axiom Haze being stellar, and slowly decreases in quality until it reaches State Space where the modular synth percussion shake things up a bit. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

It's fine, it's listenable, albeit a little tame in parts. The spacey moments were the most memorable to me, particularly in Still Waters. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

After the first two songs which were stellar folk rock tunes with delightful structure and writing, the record sort of looses identity and Bill's voice becomes a bit boring in length. Though it's never a tedious listen, but it never really wows me either. Towards the end, he pulls off a lyrically less-is-more ballad with How Beautiful I Am, as well as closing it out with a soft little harmonic instrumental that elevates it just to 3 stars. Not a record I wouldn't need to ever listen to again, but many better ones are standing in line too. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

His acclaimed There Is Love In You (2010) is the only microhouse album I have heard, and I am still the only person who hate it. However, because downtempo was primary, I decided to know listen to Three. And it's okay, it's passable. It does the job of setting a mood, and that counts of both the downtempo and the ambient songs (okay Gliding Through Everything is attractive a soundscape). I have heard groovier, more cutting edge, more memorably tense compositions in these areas of music, but I have also heard stuff that tried more yet failed more. Most of the LP is good to study to, not to be made the priority of attention. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]

A mixed candy bag of new age and spiritual jazz. It was a pleasant ride, and most of the tunes I enjoyed, that doesn't mean that it is memorable though. Poetry sections were spotty too. [First added to this chart: 08/24/2025]
