Sunday the 3rd of February 2013, 6:00 a.m. is forever going to be burned indelibly on my memory not least because it was my first listen to m b v, but because it's release was a genuine EVENT and more importantly because it was FUCKING brilliant.
Here, like their previous releases, was a record that was totally incorporeal. This was music that had absolutely nothing to do with the real world, if anything, it felt like a chunk of heaven had suddenly fell to earth, not being the work of mere mortals 'm b v' sounded like it had been sculpted from the hands of angels. Wasn't 'who see's you' the sound of your life flashing before you as your soul bursts through the clouds to arrive at heaven's gate, wasn't 'in another way' the perfect soundtrack to that scene where everything gets heavily psychedelic in '2001: A Space Odyssey' and wasn't 'wonder 2' My Bloody Valentine at their most bonkers and their most bafflingly disorientating.
m b v was the soundtrack to February 2013, scratch that, 2013 and it was fucking great.

Depeche Mode, yet again continue to deliver excellent new material that not only breaks new ground but see's them re-develop, re-evolve their idiosyncratic 'sound'. Despite their legendary status, Depeche Mode continue to be the sound of the future. [First added to this chart: 03/17/2013]

Electronic soundscapes produced 1973-81, sexual and luxurious, the shadow of San Francisco's bathhouses looms large on these recordings. Originally used by gay porno company Fox Studio to soundtrack their movies and posthumously released from an artist who died in 1982; it is surprising how advanced and innovative School Daze is, as well as the undeniable similarity it bears to ambient-era Aphex Twin - more shocking is the fact that it has spent over 30 years gathering dust. Sounding all the more like the future getting lost in the post, School Daze is essential listening for all technophiles. [First added to this chart: 12/16/2013]

Plaintive synthpop and classic 70s rock are an unlikely pairing but John Grant manages to merge them brilliantly. Barbed, often funny, but usually very sad lyrics detail the protaganist's self-destructive but addictive obsession with a former lover, making for absorbing if at times uncomfortable listening. Primal Scream have made another classic album to join the ranks of Screamadelica and Xtrmntr, demonstrating more intelligence and rock'n'roll spirit on their 10th album than most of today's rockers can manage in a career, More Light is effortlessly cool. [First added to this chart: 05/14/2013]

Right now Franz Ferdinand couldn't write a filler even if they wanted to and this album is all killer with each cut a potential single. Not straying from the winning formula they perfected in 2004 i.e.(Blondie + Talking Heads x 1979) the album is a timely reminder of how lucky we are to have them around. Lazy, soft, & slow, the daydream made real. Although lacking the intensity of their earlier work, She Paint's Words in Red is an elegant amble down the gentle rock they've honed to perfection. [First added to this chart: 03/17/2013]

After nearly 20 years the Kitchens of Distinctions have returned with a new album that is even more skyscraping and far-out than it's predecessor. Julian Swales' guitar still sounds like the cosmos stretching out whilst Patrick Fitzgeralds lyrics are as touching and allegorical as any student of Yeats can be. Welcome back. After an 11 year gap, Stephin has returned to the Future Bible Heroes moniker with another great album of ironic synth-pop that would make Noel Coward or Cole Porter proud. Love it. [First added to this chart: 07/01/2013]
