Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 84.1/100, a mean average of 83.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 84.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.0.

Does anyone else realise that this is the first studio album by the Kinks that never made the album charts in the UK, and none of their subsequent albums did either. After Something Else - which only reached No 32 in 1967, only compilation LP's made the charts. I find this absolutely staggering, just what were the British public buying from 1967 onwards. Classics like this, Arthur, Muswell Hillbillies, Lola & Preservation Act's one & two seem to have been completely ignored at the time. I wonder how many copies these albums actually sold. I can't think of another band as huge as this that stopped making the charts at the height of their career. Does anyone have an explanation for this ? (Edited)

"Village Green Preservation Society" is the Kinks' masterwork. Described as "a concept album lamenting the passing of old-fashioned English traditions". The creative processes was against the prevailing musical climate in 1968. Opening with the title track, the tone of the album is set. A whimsical album containing catchy songs with stunning arrangements and clever lyrics. There's a cozy warmth to this album. A collection of wistful tunes. This charming album reflects a time of innocence and optimism that was soon to erode away. The Kinks at their creative height. (Edited)

This is a fun, and very British album. It’s got whimsy lyrics and a somewhat sparse but pastoral sound paired with pristine production and incredible harmonies. Picture books is masterpiece of indie rock pop songwriting and will be the one song to stay stuck in your head for days aside from every other song on the album. (Edited)

Such an underrated band, such a fantastic album. In thier time, the Davies' little garage band could rock as hard as the Stones and sing as sweetly as the Beatles. Great starting point for a future Kinks fan.
