Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.7/100, a mean average of 72.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.3.

Without David Lee Roth, Van Halen is a different band. Most of the 'original' VH's personality is predicated on David Lee Roth's sense of humor - tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic, like the kid throwing paper airplanes in the back of a 6th grade classroom. "Eat 'em And Smile," Roth's solo debut, is a masterful example of that personality.
With their clown prince gone and Sammy Hagar in, "5150" finds Van Halen settling into '80s adult-oriented rock respectability, e.g. like Foreigner, (whose Mick Jones produced "5150.")
On "5150," VH's no longer cutting-edge, but they're doing a new thing. Now they're the best of the '80s radio rock bands. "Dreams" or "I Want to Know What Love Is"? "Best of Both Worlds" or "Double Vision"? "5150" sounds dated, but what from '86 doesn't? "Get Up" and "The Inside" (two of the songs Roth would've owned,) are filler. Hagar's not a comedian.
In my opinion this was the last decent Van Halen album. The consensus in the music world being that Van Halen without DLR would be like Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant, i.e, that it would be the end of the journey. Despite that fact Van Halen delivered a cracking album with a more radio friendly edge. If I had to think about the music for summer it would include 'Dreams', 'Why Can't This Be Love' and 'Best of Both Worlds' after this album, apart for the compilation 'Best of Both Worlds' Van Halen ceased to exist for me and I moved into David Lee Roth solo works which are also excellent in their own right.
The departure of Diamond Dave didn't harm the band too much as far as the singing goes. Sammy Hagar is a worthy replacement. The sound is starting to sound a bit old on this outing, though, and a couple of the hits at the time have not dated well. Still a very good little rocker.
I had the single "why can't this be love" and played it endlessly, loved it. I then had this on tape and hearing it again now after more than 30 years, it's mostly forgettable. Nothing much has stuck in the memory bar the odd thing. I mean it's alright but 1984 is much more memorable and listenable and just better. Mate I listened to 1984 a lot more. Dreams is cheesy too. Mind you memory says this is better than the next album that I got for Xmas 1988 instead of the Jungle Brothers album I asked for.
With Sammy Hagar taking lead, over half of "5150" rocks. The majority of the rest is fairly average pop/rock.
