Shortlisted for album of the year at the 1997 Grammys. The winner was Falling Into You by Celine Dion. This should probably have won
Some great tracks (The New Pollution, Where It's At, Devils Haircut and Jackass) but also quite a lot of weak tracks (Readymade, High 5, Derelict). Decent but won't be rushing to listen to it again. The bass on a lot of the tracks is really good though.
I remember stopping on Beck every time while turning the radio dial on the boom box I got for my birthday. I love the album, with its bizarre lyrics and complex structures - while maintaining the alternative, DIY aesthetic.
I remember seeing Beck at a festival concert maybe a year or so after this album came out. What I remember from his live act was that none of the songs really mattered…it was all about the vibe and the showmanship. Same with the record, I suppose. It’s probably not a great set of songs, but it’s definitely a platform for Beck to be Beck.

For my ears a very uneven album stylistically, not very cohesive. Too many songs that I did not like.
Unique. Enjoyable but not one I'd have on high rotation.

A pegada de Hip Hop é puro brilhantismo!
What genre is this? The answer: Beck. It's a collage of everything Beck ever experienced and made his own thing. It's like an art student did a scrapbook of things he like and end up made a fresh work. Beck had no one particular style and THAT is Beck's style.

Beck can be brilliant in passages, but I just don't like very many of these songs.
I don't find it that enjoyable, but this is an artistic statement, effortlessly blending so many different genres of music that is admirable at the very least.
