Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.3/100, a mean average of 71.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

Wow, does Paul McCartney seem revitalized or what? I've never been a huge McCartney fan, but there's a focus to this album i haven't ever seen in his solo works, including any of his recent stuff all the way back to "Ram". He works with a handful of producers to deliver a very good album with no glaring WTF?! moments that bespeckle most of his solo discography. If you just judge this album based on it being created by a 71 year old, then that might elicit a "WTF?!" response; that is, until you hear it was written by McCartney. Still, if this album, which tries on different genres from acoustic folk to electronic flavor like trying on familiar, warm, comfortable coats with ease, had someone like julian casablancas' name behind it, then the indie world would've gone apesh|t for this album long ago. Of course, julian couldn't give songs like "early days" their gravitas, but that's beside the point. I know Rolling Stone mag likes to give end-of-the year props to a handful of old fogies probably because they're the "old standard rock'n'roll" fogies, but in this case, it's well deserved.
I scoffed... until I had a listen. Yes, McCartney is a shadow of his former self. Yes, he's looking like Joan Rivers lately. Yes, this is a tad on the safe side - poppy rock with a nod to current trends. But he does it all without sounding tired, lazy, or cliche, like he did on some many of his post 1980 work. This is a fun album with some really interesting moments, and no duds.
New, certainly has a contemporary sound to it, and it just about holds together sonically even though McCartney uses a handful of different producers. It's really three types of songs, uptempo rockers, acoustic based songs, and, ballads. The acoustic numbers are easily the best. Early days, and, on my way to work, are excellent tracks, alligator, is another standout. Save us, is okay, and, everybody out there, is designed for live performance. Queenie eye, is catchy nonsense, and the title track is of similar stock. Appreciate, and, looking at her, go for a modern sound, but come over as a bit forced, road, is so-so, the 'hidden' track is one of the best songs. All in all, it's enjoyable, and McCartney is obviously trying very hard, but it just doesn't have that looseness that say, chaos and creation, had.
Really did not expect a 21st-century Paul McCartney album to be this bold, this confident and this good
It's good to see Paul McCartney still at it. Especially impressive is how he can branch out a little while still rooted in his own signature sound.
