Okay, I know I know... you're wondering what I'm doing back so fast. Well, have very very low stress/effort office work I'm doing right now so I can just push play and listen with pretty good attention paid. Yet, I still won't have much to say about this.
This is cool, another cool dark atmospheric punishingly heavy at times beautiful at times sad at times downright mean-spirited sludgy classic from this legendary band. It has a little better flow than Through Silver In Blood, but I think the album before this one is better and more of an acheivement. There are still really a whole hell of a lot of truly impressive sounds and moments here. Of the albums I have heard by Neurosis with any great attention paid, Souls At Zero is probably my favorite, because it seems to be that perfect balance of sludge and pissed off post hardcore. With this one a good 7 years after souls at zero they had mostly moved solidly onto their established very great style and I can hear much less of that pissed-offness I love in their early 90s albums. The vocals are less awe-inspiring here which is a bummer because the vocals on earlier neurosis are godly and perfect.
The mood is again that neurosis vibe of apocalyptic brooding morbid darkness, and that is dope and done here as well as anywhere else I've heard it (outside of Through Silver In Blood, or, in a VERY different way, Hecker's Ravedeath 1972) and when I'm next really in the mood for a long-ish, conceptual, flowing piece of post apocalyptic art, I will stop here again for another listen (plus it will eventually be heard in my 1990s artists deep dive. That will be some months though.)

2. Close to a World Below by Immolation/2000/RYM #41 metal album of all time (okay, now that a spot has freed up, this brand new listen of this classic DM album is now a possible Nom)
3. Imaginations From the Other Side by Blind Guardian/1995/RYM #80 metal album of all time (first power metal choice woohoo. i guess. I mean something about power metal just seems so corny, but maybe I will hear it differently after listening to this classic.)
4. My Arms, Your Hearse by Opeth/1998/RYM #92 metal album of all time (apparently this was the first of the new Opeth sound that they developed over half a dozen classics from 1998 to 2005 - that patented Prog metal/Prog Roc and Death metal sound that all associate with Opeth. So, despite being kinda generally bored by Opeth, this could be interesting and maybe great.)
5. Pierced From Within by Suffocation/1995/RYM #94 metal album of all time (another BRUTAL death metal album woohoo! I liked that None So Vile listen so maybe I'll dig this too.)
6. Here In After by Immolation/1996/RYM #113 metal album of all time (another classic death metal immolation album. Nice!)
7. A Sun That Never Sets by Neurosis Omega/2001/RYM #118 (Much like Opeth, Neurosis released a string of bangers that are loved by RYM crowd. I happen to be a little more on board with the hype surrounding Neurosis, however. Atmospheric Sludge per these genre tags)
8. Leaving Your Body Map + Bath by maudlin of the Well/2001/RYM #129 and #161 metal albums of all time respectively (yay! Here it is again! When I added 1995 albums and I removed restrictions on one album per artist for this list I was sad to see Incantation and these 2 maudlin of the Well albums be buried again. So, thanks for getting them here. They are very strange yet beautiful and unique somewhat abstract avant garde albums - Bath and Leaving Your Body Map were released the same day. Seem to be equally liked. Looking forward to listening to this 2 hours of music and giving thoughts. Pick one and I'll listen to both.)
9. You Fail Me by Converge/2004/RYM #130 metal album of all time (The second most famous Converge album and maybe mathcore album generally. Looking forward to dipping my toes into this newly with a few more years experience and a bit more context.)
10. October Rust by Type O Negative/1996/RYM #131 metal album of all time (This lists first ever Gothic Metal album! Woohoo! Can't say I know almost any Type O Negative. So here ya go. Live After Death by Iron Maiden
Great live set, like an Iron Maiden greatest hits. I understand this was recorded during the tour for Powerslave, and I'm not huge on Maiden's subsequent work, so this was great. I think the first 2/3 of the album recorded in Long Beach were clearly superior to the final tracks recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in London. Though the crowd noise during the Long Beach portion gets way more pervasive throughout the album, to the point on some songs where it drowns out certain instrumentals. The highlight for me was the four tracks in a row that close the Long Beach portion: "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "Iron Maiden", "Run to the Hills", and "Running Free". Maiden's s/t debut is my favorite album of theirs, and the live versions of those songs absolutely KILL it here. Wonderful set, glad I listened.

This is the only thing I know I've heard by Three 6 Mafia (I may have heard a song here and there and not known) and I don't know anything about them but they don't seem very popular here? This album is ranked 583rd for the year with only 7 votes. But I thought It was really good...and if I'm wrong and it isn't good (because I'm not the one to judge hip hop) I really liked it anyway. Simply put I loved the sound of this - the beats were interesting, often had my head bopping and mostly just sounded great, the rapping was aggressive but in a fun way, the female rapper/s on a lot of the songs were welcome additions, adding value to each track. Sure the lyrics may have been a weak point, but they sometimes contributed to the catchiness, and seemed part of the show or act, for entertainment value rather than for shock or hatefulness reasons. I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this - at over an hour long it never felt like it, in fact it seemed to go by quickly. Always a good sign for me. 8/10, and the most I've enjoyed a hip hop album from 2000, coming in 24/73.
EyeKanFly, I'm a fan of live music and live albums and Jeff Rosenstock so I really want to hear that one so that's what you're getting.

Nurture by Porter Robinson
The first song was brilliant, thought I was in for a great ride. Unfortunately the instrumental intro was literally the only good song here. Most of the album is an ill advised mix of Indietronica and electropop with EDM, sometimes folk too. The choruses were probably supposed to sound catchy and massive but they really weren’t, the vocals sounded processed and autotuned to the point of parody at times and the songwriting was extremely forgettable. The only parts I liked were piano intermissions like on Wind Tempos. Despite it having folky parts and nature sounds, nothing here sounded organic. Washy production which went in all directions at once but did nothing right certainly didn’t help. Nothing here really resembles a cohesive piece of pop music for that matter. The only reasons why I think this is bad but not terrible is the admittedly unique mix of genres and the fact that I did manage to finish the album without being extremely irritated by anything. There was always a sound or two which was kinda cool. For reference, I was listening to this one on the bus ride, but I doubt a listen with better headphones at home would make much difference, the selling point is “a lot of sounds” and I just happen to dislike most of those sounds. 5/10

The Ownerz is the last album Gang Starr made before Guru passed away, and I have mixed feelings about it. This is a great set of boom bap beats from DJ Premier, and Guru's flow is smooth as ever. But unfortunately, there's a bunch of filler, as well as one piece of steaming garbage in Hiney. Overall, the lyrics take a big step down. For one, this is their most homophobic album, with about half the tracks featuring an anti-gay slur or line. And as usual, there's not much variety in lyrical themes, but as these mostly sound like echoes of past classics instead of classics in their own right, it's harder for Guru to get away with that. The best track is probably Rite Where U Stand with Jadakiss. A pretty good record in spite of its flaws, but a big step down from Moment Of Truth. 3/5.

But, by and large, over this 70+ album I was bored and a bit annoyed by the moody, gothic, theatrical qualities of it. Just kinda wore on me. Not a fan of the singing (although not nearly as over the top as I thought it would be based off some comments I read pre-listen - some moments the singer was solid.) The Band, well, I think they're good. Can't really tell. Not my thing. At this times, at least, I am not vibing with this much.

I was hoping someone would pick this. A long overdue first listen, considering my adoration for Curtis Mayfield's music. Unsurprisingly, this compact 25-minute record is top-shelf with flashes of brilliance. Between strong songwriting from Mayfield and gorgeous arrangements from Johnny Pate (they'd team up again for Superfly) and Donny Hathaway, it lays the foundation for his solo career. But that's not to say the other two Impressions don't also add a lot - their vocal harmonies definitely enhance this album. While everything is at least great, The Young Mods' Forgotten Story only has a small handful's worth of classic songs, which keeps this from getting an even higher rating. But who knows, maybe the remaining songs will grow on me with future listening. 4/5.

this is indeed a great album, and a classic. I am no good at writing about hip hop and why and how I love it. But this has most elements I want to hear in a hip hop album: incredible personality, incredible lyrics, a slight variety of sounds but also a consistent groove track to track and also within tracks, and also some cool features. The only down side is that I have not YET fully fallen in love with DOOM's voice and delivery. Its very cool, monotone. There is a level of depth to his lyrics it blows me away. The sheer number of brilliant one liners is astounding. So, with such amazing and unique lyrics I don't NEED to love the voice to think the album is great.
I also can say after 2 listens I like this more than Madvillainy. Maybe because its more lush... or IDK I am now thinking about my thoughts on Madvillainy last time I heard it and maybe I like that more... damn! I just don't know. They're both cool.

Not really a genre I get into but I am starting to like it a bit more than I used to the more I hear. This was enjoyable at first, with some cool sounds that I found interesting enough but after about six songs I had had enough. Still I would be happy to listen to a song or two from this every now and again. 7/10, and 56/89 for 2010.

This is cool. It is one long song which manages to go no where and everywhere at the same time. It returns to motifs and the music is consistently mesmerizing and beautiful and inspired. As far as 1 song albums, this tops Thick As A Brick for me (which I just listened to last night) and this also tops Crimson by Edge of Sanity by a little. The dub bits and the mesmerizing piano bits and the whole dreamy psych vibe is dope. Vocals didn't quite blow me away, and some part of me was underwhelmed by the song due to maybe it being hyped up as much as is possible in the internet music geek community. I've heard it before and this is probably listen 3 or 4. It gets more familiar each time (go figure) and it becomes more and more comforting and sweet and nostalgic each time.
Its not like a new all time favorite. But it may be able to crack a 1990s chart sometime soon. And it may just be the fact that I haven't still listened as much as it deserves. Or whatever, what am I saying Iike it. It feels like an entire life cycle from beginning to end. The drumming is hypnotic and brilliant and the violin parts are really really cool as are the keyboard/organ bits... like I said this album manages to go soooo many places in its 35 minutes and yet it never once feels like its another seperate, disconnected part when it does break off in a new direction. This is (i imagine) hard to pull off. The live album has a 4.38 avg rating on RYM which is... absurdly high. This has a 4.16. Nowadays on that site for some reason it is impossible or near impossible for albums to ever crack 3.8 avg scores. So clearly this is a special, almost religious and spiritual experience type of album for MANY people. I get it. Its special.
