This is one of the albums I have heard before, but it was once only, and immediately after it was released. It wasn't what I was expecting after their self titled and Demon Days and I don't think I was ready for it then, so I didn't think much of it and never went back. Since then Stylo has grown on me, and On Melancholy Hill is probably now one of my top 5 Gorillaz songs, and my music tastes have evolved and are a lot more accepting of the sort of styles that Gorillaz were playing around with on this album, and I enjoyed this a lot more. Glad to revisit it ten years later. 7.5/10 and 38/92 for 2010.

I typically am not a live album person. Most people aren't that talented - hehe. Anyway, really glad PurplePash selected this one though because it showed me a different side of Jeff Buckley, namely a much grittier/rockier one... Eternal Life and Kick Out The Jams were incredibly more in your face than I expected. There was also a jammier aspect - the performances lived instead of were molded injected plastic. Great live experience. Thanks.

I already knew three of these songs from Gold, and all three are great, with Lay All Your Love On Me being particularly excellent. So the question is, does the rest of Super Trouper hold up as an album? Unfortunately, it's pretty lightweight outside the big hits, and the decision to close the album with a slow and cheesy live recording doesn't help. The one standout album track is Our Last Summer, which is a great slice of melancholic nostalgia. Bonus track and b-side Elaine is a missed opportunity to improve the record, as it's easily better than 3-4 of these songs. But due to ABBA's exceptional skills as pop composers and performers, all the lightweight songs are still good, even when the lyrics don't deliver. So Super Trouper is quite a nice listen despite the filler, although I wouldn't call it an essential album. 3.5/5.

La Femme - Paradigmes
Here I am rock you like a hurricane, itโs been quite some time. Well, I delayed listening to this for various reasons. Apart from being immersed in Mingus, I also wanted to pull myself together after the turbulent times of As Days Get Dark by Arab Strap, which was the previous album I was assigned here. Plus EyeKanFly called this his album of the year, so I had to make sure I take my time with it and give it the attention it deserved. After three and a half listens โ there were four of them, but one was under dubious circumstances, so it barely counts - I have to admit I still donโt know, I guess itโs one of those albums you arenโt supposed to take seriously. Actually, let me rephrase, the less seriously you take it, the better it sounds. The best way I could describe this is that a couple of friends got together, were a bit bored and thought letโs make an album and make sure we have a good time. This is all over the map and never approaches tedious or repetitive territory, it keeps its entertainment value rather high throughout its entire running time, as it has various aces up its sleeve. For example, Disconnexion adds a country twist that seemingly comes out of nowehere. Foreigner sounds like something Daft Punk would have made if they were a Britpop band, go figure. Also, I understand that you (EyeKanFly I mean) really like Muse, so maybe thatโs why you found this so relatable, Lรขcher de chevaux is like Knights Of Cydonia meets Take A Bow with a touch of The 2nd Law as well. The language barrier was a non-factor for me, I donโt think profound lyrics is what they were going for anyway. I would argue towards the opposite direction, ie. the aesthetics of the French language contributed to the catchy, ear-pleasing outcome. So, itโs a bit like a B-movie, it may be a guilty pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless - hopefully this didn't sound too harsh, apologies if it did.

A beautiful and relaxed nocturnal album that seamlessly combines the styles and strengths of Adderley & Evans, Know What I Mean? is mostly bop with a substantial dose of cool jazz. It leads off with signature Evans composition Waltz For Debby. This is my first time hearing a studio version of it, and this energetic take on the song is a highlight of the album. The closing and title track is another Evans brainchild, and another great performance. The rest of the album is composed of standards, and Adderley's playing is in top form throughout. A record that does an excellent job of conjuring a mood and creating an ambiance. I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I do, and it will be landing high on my 1961 chart shortly. 4/5.

Excellent stuff. As witg most jazz I don't have many words to artfully describe it. Its a really vibrant and groovy jazz album with really great and sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious homages to earlier roots and blues music. Its all tied together so that it always feels like a classic Mingus album and never like a major stylistic detour if that makes sense. Its cool. Loved the bass and the drums and most all the instrumentation. I think I've heard 3 or 4 mingus albums that I can clearly remember now (probably another 3 or 4 others that I paid not enough attention to) and those are Black Saint..., Mingus Ah Um, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus, and now this. Of those this is number 3 or 4 I think. I adore Black Saint and its perpetually in my overall or always in contention and consideration. Mingus Ah Um is stunning and one of my fave 50s albums, and MingusX5 and now this are also great and maybe just as great but require TLC. Good stuff.

Took EPs off and took archival off and am so deluged by Live albums I'm thinking of removing them too and just working through LPs and Mixtapes, while keeping one EP on - an EP longer than most albums - on as well as the Live albums here I will probably keep and as they are nominated I'll fill this list more and more with LPs and Mixtapes.

Another album I've heard in full only once in my pre rating and ranking days. I've heard a couple of the songs a bit though as the title track (which I always think of Lemonheads meet Talking Heads when I hear it) and Spanish Sahara are both sometimes appear on my playlists. Spanish Sahara is an excellent song by the way, and the highlight of this album. This gives me a chance to post this version which I always post whenever the opportunity arises. A band I love that I saw live a handful of times raising the emotional stakes of the original. He puts his whole heart and soul into this. I already knew Spanish Sahara, but it was hearing this interpretation that made me realise how great the song itself was. Link
On to the album as a whole. I really like the interesting rhythms throughout the album, but some of the songs towards the end aren't as good as the rest of the album. I
also dig Yannis's voice, but I think he uses it more powerfully later in their career, and I generally prefer their rockier, shoutier material. Still a good album with a few highs that gets a high 7.5/10, and comes in at 33/93 in my 2010 chart.
Mercury, Songs For The Deaf is my 2nd favourite QOTSA album, and a great album experience as a whole, worthy of a first QOTSA album to listen to.

This was excellent. It was so groovy, heavy, melodic, swaggering, confident, and just a rock solid classic in hard rock music. Its got metal elements but gobs of hooks and a certain non-metal-associated coolness that could win over any alt rock or rock fan, but its also heavy and intense and badass enough to win over the metal kids (or a lot of them). Some of these songs are quite famous and I had heard them many many times as a kid, but some of the deeper cuts are equally instantly lovable and hummable and just seemed to be so primal-y natural. This is the kind of album with the perfect balance of groove and simplicity with complexity and artisticness to scratch basically any itch I have for hard rock. Its a shame I never went and bought this CD when I was 13 because this would have, no doubt, become a favorite of mine had I just given it the time. I was a worshipper of NIN and White Stripes and Slayer and Metallica and Sabbath... this would have fit so neatly and nicely into my head canon and I would have had a ball trying to win over my dad about this modern band. Oh well. better late than never.

Just albums and mixtapes now. Pretty straight forward. The asterisk before some albums indicates I have never listened to this album. All of these, including ones with no asterisk, are quite vague and faint in my recollection and need revisits.
1. Deathconsciousness by Have A Nice Life/2008/RYM #116 all time album/mixtape (yeah I heard this in a very very workmanlike fashion, just kinda listening to it to get it listened to and out of the way maybe a year ago or 2. I remember thinking it was way way too somber and dark for my tastes especially at the time. But I just went and listened to that GYBE album and in liostening to that I decided to make sure I wasn't giving short shrift to any albums before Ex Military and found this and found that I can't remember much about it except that I didn't like it. Need to revisit. May still not be a favorite but will pay closer attention this time.)
