Reign In Blood by Slayer
(and for this, the most heinous of crimes in my opinion, the culprit was none other than LedZep... for shame)
I do love Slayer and 3 of their most popular albums were certainly in considerations, but there's just too many great albums to choose from. I didn't include Dissection, Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Incantation (!), Darkthrone, Immolation, Burzum (!), Ved Buens Ende, Demilich, Annihilator, Deicide, Acid Bath, Enslaved (!)... And those are just off the top of my head.
Yes of course I do understand. Mostly giving you a hard time in mock over-exaggerated dramatic ways because, yknow, Reign In Blood is my number 1. BUT obviously silly because I didn’t have your 1, nor actually any of the 4 people’s number 1 on my chart at all ha!
And yeah when you listed those bands you didn’t include I was amazed. Because were i to make a LedZep-core Metal album list, FOR SURE Incantation would be there more than once, as would Autopsy (because it is so DOOMY along with its OS Death Metal sound, also Demilich may have been in there.
And that reminds me, not a single Demilich album picked by anyone, no Dissection, and the list of shockers goes on.
With a sample of size of only 5 charts of course there will be some WILD omissions. There kinda has to be. But I knew the world was getting out of control when I saw no RAINBOW on Repo’s chart lol. No Rainbow anywhere! _________________ -Ryan
I'm definitely going on a metal binge, have to give some of these another (or even first) listen. You don't need to update your spreadsheet every time I change the chart, I suspect there will be changes on a daily basis...
And surely Repo just forgot Rainbow exists lol. Also, I completely forgot about Esoteric, surely one of their albums will land on the chart. Indeed some wild omissions, not only on my chart but on all 5 combined! _________________ Finally updated the overall chart

I can kind of understand where you are coming from with Sabbath. To me, they are head and shoulders above and distinct amongst all the hard rock-bordering on early Metal of the late 60s and 70s. But when I take a step back and listen to clear Heavy Metal sabbath classics like idk, Supernaut, I can see that if they were made in a modern context they would sound like cool hard rock, stoner rock or something in comparison to the other stuff being released nowadays. A challenge I get it.
As for no Hair metal, I was low key happy because I have a bias against the look and to a degree sound of 80s Hair Metal. I may overcome that someday and when I make my attempt, I will use your chart as a resource. _________________ -Ryan

Lol I get it, hair metal certainly didn't help itself with the way it pushed its image to the extreme, though I'd argue there were plenty of outside forces aiming at doing exactly that. The Decline of Western Civilization Part II, which is a pretty good documentary, definitely takes sort of a condescending look at the people within 80s metal and especially hair metal. That being said, plenty of those guys didn't help themselves either - I mean in that movie specifically there's a really tragic interview with Chris Holmes, lead guitarist from WASP, downing multiple bottles of vodka floating in a pool talking about how miserable he is (luckily Holmes has been sober since 1996 and is still alive).
So I mean, as far as the image of hair metal goes, I get it. The look and everything was an extension of the glam stuff from the 70s but then I personally feel like it started pushing itself further and further to the point where it seemed almost self-aware of how absurd it was (unless we truly believe the guys from Nitro were very serious about this insane music video)
I think there's a lot to like in some of hair metal though. Plenty of it is cheesy, but as someone who absolutely loves guitar porn, there are so many incredible guitarists who are unsung because they were buried in hair metal. Guys like Nuno Bettencourt in Extreme, Vito Bratta in White Lion, Reb Beach in Winger, these guys are truly astounding guitarists and I love listening to them.
Anyways, maybe one day you'll suddenly fall in love with hair metal like I did lol _________________ 2023 Chart

I only list five since the rest of the list would just be the same bands, but different albums. Like Ratt's Invasion of Privacy, Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil and Def Leppard's Pyromania. Honestly I play these albums when I'm in the same mood for other AOR Metal of the early 80s like Ozzy, Dio & Rainbow that may or may not be considered Hair Metal, but would fit in perfectly on same playlist.
Glam/Hair has good even great albums, but I struggle to put them with all-time classics. The only exceptions made by people in general seems to be groups like WASP, Dokken, etc. who had just as much as a metal component as they had a ballady, almost soft rock-esque metal approach.
Not just great guitarists, look at drummer Rod Morganstein in Winger and bassist Billy Sheehan in Mr. Big (who I got to see open for Rush on the Presto tour). Plenty of better than average musicians all around.
But I also have a fairly strong distaste, not only for the sound, but also the whole image. That said, I did start off with some tolerance, and have some leftover appreciation.
Having long been a fan of the blues rock great Whitesnake and having had a complete collection of their albums so far, I did snag a copy of the s/t 1987 release and could sing and sway along with Her I Go Again like any other inebriated fool. Then I saw them in concert on that tour and even knowing they had gone hair, figured they'd still kick out mostly great blues metal. Nope. The whole show just screamed sellout to the point I was soured pretty much from that point forward. I did dabble with Winger and Skid Row a bit, but that didn't last.

One of my first dalliances was the London Quireboys. More glam hard rock, but got lumped with in glam/hair metal. It was as if Rod Stewart decided to get heavy. But I don't really like Rod, so again , that didn't last long.

Now one I did like a lot, and I still have their CDs is Badlands. Killer group. Yeah, they rock, and they seem more serious than silly doing it. They're a keeper.
And I'll leave you with a hidden gem. Again, this group was more on the blues based hard rock side, but they had the hair on their heads and enough hair in their production to get the label. Label notwithstanding, I loved and will always love this album:

I'd add Skid Row to this, at least with Slave to the Grind, which is way heavier than just about anything other hair metal bands put out (and as a result, I think it's the best Skid Row ever did).
And agreed that hair metal bands were loaded with talented musicians on every instrument. I still maintain that Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart is one of the most incredible singers I've ever heard in my life. _________________ 2023 Chart
