Gainesville, Florida, natives Big Shoals work in much the same musical terrain as alt-country legends Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton, but so far haven't quite translated their considerable talent into widespread appeal. It's not for lack of terrific songwriting and musicianship; it just feels like they haven't quite been discovered by a wider audience yet. But that could easily happen if they continue making songs as excellent as "12 Steps," a deeply affecting exploration of addiction and recovery.
