Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.4/100, a mean average of 71.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.2.

I wonder where the low ratings come from. Is it the softer rock? Either way, I was very impressed with the first half.

I usually don't care for christian rock but Jars of Clay is the exception. This album has a rather beautiful orchestrated pop sound to it and some creative songwriting. The uplifting faith-based lyrics are refreshing to hear. I'm not a religious person but its easy to feel the sincerity behind this and open your heart to it.

It is a pretty good pop/rock album for being christian rock. Most christian/religious music i can't stand because the message overwhelms the music, and for the most part, the message is the key so skilled musicianship comes secondary at best. Not that jars of clay are great musicians, but they do well, and with the help of adrian belew (who has produced david bowie, talking heads and frank zappa) they sound like masters of their art form even though this is their debut. "flood" ("But if I can't swim after forty days / and my mind is crushed by the crashing waves / Lift me up so high that I cannot fall") and "worlds apart" were the hits. Their lyrics were general enough (for a christian rock band) to where God and Love (capital L) could just as well be family or friends or lovers -- however you want to interpret -- and the sort-of-alt-rock sound (in the flavor of toad the wet sprocket) works.
