To me, a good New Pornographers album needs to feature a couple of songs from Destroyer, and this album is missing that certain Dan Bejar charm.
Some excellent tracks here, and longtime fans will be pleased, but it doesn't sustain all the way through. The compromise of having such dramatic high points in the first half all but dooms the second half to fail to ever catch up with that pace. The good parts are extremely good.
Fucking great album. Whiteout Conditions, though penned and performed by relative geezers, is an incredibly catchy and inventive 41-minute trip. It avoids the airheaded whininess of other ambitious modern rock bands (like Arcade Fire) without ever hiding beyond dreariness (like Radiohead). Definitely the best album of 2017.

What to make of Whiteout Conditions ? I think it’s great , possibly...not sure
I hate it , possibly...not sure. I can’t get a grip on this album. Having said that it’s been on my Spotify for most of 2017 & just can’t bring myself to delete it & listening to it often . I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but there’s something there I just can’t quite put my finger on . Sorry for posting such a confusing review , it’s a confusing listen
