I'm a big fan of The New Pornographers, but this is quite clearly the beginning of the end of their peak years. I absolutely love 'Crash Years' and 'We End Up Together' -- they're two of my favourite New Pornographers songs -- but I find that the album overall falls well short of the bar that the band set themselves. When you compare this album to say, Twin Cinema, it just sounds so uninspired and generic. Even the vocal harmonies are uninteresting for the most part! That's half the appeal of the band. While I disagree with the general consensus that things started to go wrong after Challengers, it's clear that The New Pornographers haven't put out anything worth listening to for a number of years now.

The new pornographers returned with a mid-tempo rocker (for them anyway) picking up the pace of "challengers" a bit but still not returning to their glory days. Most songs only have 1-or-2 hooks whereas their first two albums packed 2-to-4 hooks in every song.

This is just another great CD from a great band, just another widely varied collection of often excellent songs by a unique band of eclectic talents.

Gets better each time I listen to it. With 4 lead singers and 9 accomplished musicians there is no shortage of new discovery with every spin. Best album of 2010 so far and best New Pornographers album yet.
