Ryan Adams seems to have slipped into "adult alternative" mode with the release of his last (solo) album "Easy Tiger". Even with the Cardinals in tow (and they were present on the last album anyway), "Cardinology" seems like a companion piece - a finely-picked short set of adult contemporary, radio-ready twangified-pop/rock that cares more about exposure and playing it safe than delving further into what i hope is still the creative mind of Ryan Adams. If you want to compare it to other Cardinals-related albums, this one is more subdued, evidenced by the choice of lead single "fix it" which has a great hook, but is down-tempo'd to allow for some E-Z-Boy-reclined toe-tappin'. I'd rather have the Ryan Adams attitude and ego -- there's more risk/reward. Hell, there's not even a "halloweenhead" on this one, forget about "firecracker" or "to be young (is to be sad)". The closest he can come is the fun-stones-riffing of "magick". Good album, but i expect MUCH more out of him.
