Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 69.7/100, a mean average of 68.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 68.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.5.

Superstar Car Wash is usually the album most people refer to as the real debut of the Goo Goo Dolls since it marks their first true album filled with power-pop and pop-punk made for the masses. While this album doesn't contain any hit singles and remains mostly a very average effort, it's a clear improvement over the band's three previous records. The undying energy, the loud guitars and the banging drums all return, but there's a bigger emphasis on hooky melodies and memorable choruses this time around. Most songs are very forgettable, though, and only Fallin' Down, We Are The Normal and Girl Next To Me truly stand out. There are also leftovers present from the band's earlier material, such as the punkish Domino.

By the second half, the songs feel very repetitive and it seems the band has tun out of things to say. I wouldn't say this is an essential listen, but it's a perfectly adequate 90s power-pop album.

Followed up on their tour opening for The Replacements with this album. One of the novelties of this album is that Head Replacement, Paul Westerberg, co-wrote the lyrics for "We Are The Normal". Other tracks demonstrate a move away from power punk to power pop that became the formula for GGD more mainstream success.

This is the beginning of them as a melodic power pop band. It's still not good but you can see the roots of good things to come.
