Surprised and disappointed to see this rank so low in 2008 (#95 at time of commenting), when at the time it was comfortably one of the year's highlights. To judge from a couple of the other comments it maybe provokes more ire than love among this site's users, but in his mainstream breakthrough Turner managed to capture the feelings of a generation of twentysomethings trapped in dead ends, frustrated by the failure of political protest, and (for many of us) having lost some good friends way too soon.
Yet for all that, it's a fundamentally uplifting, life-affirming album that opens with three immensely catchy folk-rock singalongs that variously dare the world to do its worst to penniless youngsters (I Knew Prufrock), urge sulky self-pitiers to seize the day (Reasons Not To Be An Idiot) and celebrate youthful rebellion in the face of ageing (Photosynthesis). A couple of slower heartbreak songs follow (Substitute & Better Half) before the album hits its stride again with a strong middle section featuring Turner at his lyrical best, including the title track's anthemic testament to political disillusionment ("the things that I believed with all my heart when I was young, are just coasters for beers and clean surfaces for drugs...") and the poignant yet defiant tale of losing his friend Lexa to breast cancer in Long Live The Queen.
With a quirky singalong tribute to old friends (St Christopher's Coming Home) and a dark, majestic piano ballad on the strain of touring (Jet Lag) wrapping things up, it's not hard to see why Love Ire & Song catapulted Turner out of the niche folk-punk scene he'd occupied for a few years and made him an alternative darling of mainstream British DJs for a while. It would prove a bumpy ride, and there'd be wrong turns along the way, but this album was the making of Frank Turner, and remains a fond reminder of a time when us young rebels danced and drank and sang away the lives we were lucky to have.
