One of the less discussed deaths last year was that of indigenous Australian musician Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, whose emphatic voice brought international attention to the Yolngu cultures of Northern Territory. The music here is very much led by Gurrumul’s powerful vocal, with the orchestra mimicking traditional didgeridoo arrangements so as to respect the original intent of the songs rather than imprint too much of a Western slant on them (I’m looking at you, Treaty (Filthy Lucre Radio Edit)).
