I'm not the biggest metal fan in the world, but this is a very powerful record, full of atmosphere and a dark, brooding presence.

I have as much abhorrence against growling technique as the majority here on this site have against teen-pop music. That said, this record is a revolting experience for me get past, but that alone doesn't condemn this album to utter trash for me. On the other hand, the great performance and composition is more than vast to offset my preference, not just the beauty of Mikael's normal singing voice (which is not much presented here sadly...), because instrumentation is more worth the mention. By and large, this is progressively touching, rather than something ruthlessly cold, which is why I like it.

Probably my favourite album from Opeth. I really appreciate how they can mix some heavy elements with a more refined gloomy prog style. Brutal and beautiful at the same time.
