While I’ve loved Esperanza Spalding’s musical mind for a while, this is her first album to fully put that mind to use in a creative and innovative way. Her past funk tunes have been fun and certainly interesting, and her early orchestral work was beautiful, but both were lacking in originality, and didn’t strike an emotional chord for me personally. Twelve Little Spells is by no means an easy-listening album, but when you have time to sit and listen properly, this album is full of beauty and intricacy like little else. One of the best albums released in recent years.
