I’m surprised I don’t hear more about this album!
I’ve been listening to XTC for quite a few years now and English Settlement is probably my favorite, even though I love Skylarking and most of their other albums as well.
I’ve only heard this album one time all the way through, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed all of it. Their music is so idiosyncratic. Even after all this time, I still find my first listens of their albums to be a bit of a mixed up affair: I know it’s good, but I can’t really grasp completely just why.
Nonsuch is jam packed with songs, but the album somehow still managed to be the most pleasant first listening experience I’ve ever had with them.
There’s a ton of variety in the songs, they’re generally more reeled-in and serious than they’ve ever been before, but the upbeat songs are still plenty of fun. The melodic movements are also more satisfying and tasteful than I’m used to hearing from them (though I still love me some chaotic Oranges And Lemons!).
I can definitely see this album becoming a top 3 from them once I become more familiar with it, maybe even #1! I’m excited to be hearing it again in its entirety soon!
Also… Wrapped In Grey is probably the most gorgeous song they’ve ever made.
This is my favourite XTC album. The band further expands the colourful, psychedelic sound of Oranges & Lemons, but the compositions are more harmonious and in many cases more sensitive than on the previous album.
