More than 50 years have passed since the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's debut album was released, and all these years later it is still a misfit and a head scratcher. The band was much more successful when they combined a formula of polished rock and contemporary neo-traditional country, with occasional tribute albums to to traditional bluegrass musicians.
Here, the band is little more than a hybrid of jug band and baroque pop. The baroque pop is successful with the minor hit "Buy for Me the Rain" and the Jackson Browne original "Holding." (He also wrote "Melissa"). Browne left the band shortly after it was founded, and left gems like "Shadow Dream Song" and "These Days" in his departure, while longtime members Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden and John McEuen make their debut here.
The jug band songs are short and sweet and forgettable and John McEuen offers the curious breakneck banjo instrumental "Dismal Swamp."
In the end, it's charming and forgettable debut from a band that would go on to bring roots music to the forefront of contemporary country and rock music.
Track Pick: Buy for Me the Rain
Curiosity: Dismal Swamp
